The Trump administration is ending up to $230 million in funding intended to help stabilize Syria, David Satterfield, the State Department's Acting Assistant Secretary for Near East Affairs, told reporters on a call Friday.

Why it matters: This is the latest in a string of cuts to Syrian stabilization funds the administration has been making following repeated complaints from President Trump about the cost of U.S. involvement. A new grand jury report implicated more than 300 priests from six Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania in the abuse of over 1,000 children. The report documents 70 years of abuse, and is the broadest examination by the federal government into child sexual abuse in the Catholic church.
Troubling new figures on drug overdose deaths also came out this week. Over 72,000 Americans died from a drug overdose last year, according to provisional estimates by the Centers for Disease Control. That's a nearly 10 percent increase from 2016. What's behind this surge? Analysts point to the growing prevalence of opioid use, and the increased deadliness of the drugs.
Tuesday was a groundbreaking day for women and people of color running in elections across the country, particularly for Democrats. Candidate Jahana Hayes won the party's support in Connecticut, and is on track to become the state's first black Democrat in Congress.
It was a tough week for many of President Trump's critics. The president yanked the security clearance of former CIA head John Brennan, who has fiercely criticized the administration.

Violence continued in Afghanistan this week. At least 311 people died during a brutal week of attacks, including one by a suicide bomber on students in a classroom. The Taliban maintained a five-day sustained assault on the eastern city of Ghazni, but the siege dulled on Wednesday when the Afghan government announced they took back control of the city.
The civil war in Yemen rages on. "At least 450 Yemenis were killed in the first nine days of August alone," according to Vice News. Vice reports that an international coalition backed by the United States is preparing to recapture the port city of Hodeidah. The movement could have devastating consequences for the Yemeni people, because nearly three-quarters of imports enter through Hodeidah. Millions of people could go hungry or without adequate medical care, if the battle is protracted.
American tariffs are compounding economic turmoil in Turkey. Last week, President Trump announced "tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum, to 50 and 20 percent, respectively." The relationship seems to be deteriorating. ...

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.
