Amazon fires show world heading for point of no return, says UN
TheGuardian | Jonathan Watts | 08/30/19

Biodiversity chief calls for countries to unite to halt rapid degradation of nature

The fires in the Amazon are "extraordinarily concerning" for the planet's natural life support systems, the head of the UN's top biodiversity body has said in a call for countries, companies and consumers to build a new relationship with nature.

Cristiana Pasca Palmer, the executive secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, said the destruction of the world's biggest rainforest was a grim reminder that a fresh approach was needed to stabilise the climate and prevent ecosystems from declining to a point of no return, with dire consequences for humanity.

"The Amazon fires make the point that we face a very serious crisis," she told the Guardian. "But it is not just the Amazon. We're also concerned with what's happening in other forests and ecosystems, and with the broader and rapid degradation of nature. The risk is we are moving towards the tipping points that scientists talk about that could produce cascading collapses of natural systems." ... Read more

Tariff Man: Behind Trump Economic Advisor Peter Navarro's Long Quest to Ratchet Up the Trade War With China
Fortune | Bob Sellers | 08/27/19

As President Trump and China escalate their trade war, there is a tariff champion in the White House that strongly supports this kind of approach. It's not Larry Kudlow, who described himself on his Kudlow.com website as an "Influential supply-side economist, and unapologetic supporter or capitalism and the free markets." (His website was taken down when he joined the administration.) Instead, it is Peter Navarro, the Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, whose raison d'être in recent years appears to be holding China accountable for its economic sins, and prepare the U.S. strategically for the threat the communist country poses economically and militarily.

But while the Harvard educated economist has the president's ear, he is not universally admired, says Phillip Braun, Professor of Finance at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. "He has ideas that have no basis in reality. Such as trade wars are good. Or that tariffs are good. But they have severe consequences for the U.S., and we've seen this in the past when the U.S. has imposed tariffs."

Nonetheless, Navarro has been able to convince the president to take on China with trade tariffs. There are now plans to expand them to more products beginning September 1st, which compelled China last week to announce retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods and U.S. crude oil imports, which in turn prompted Mr. Trump to announce additional tariffs on more goods at higher levels as he "ordered" American companies to bring their operations back home. Most economic forecasters -- including the Congressional Budget Office -- have lowered their GDP forecasts in the coming months and years. And JP Morgan says the average American family will face $1,000 of additional costs per year. ... Read more

The Pentagon's New Missile Drive Is Bringing Armageddon Closer
TheNation | Michael Klare | 08/30/19

Washington is withdrawing from the INF treaty not because of Russian violations but because the Pentagon wants to deploy a dangerous new class of its own nukes.

On August 2, in a brazen attack on the arms control architecture forged by US and Soviet leaders during the Cold War era, the United States formally withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, a 1987 accord that bans the possession of ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with a range of between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,420 miles). Just two weeks later, on August 18, the Defense Department test-fired a cruise missile that would have violated the treaty, were the United States still in compliance. That test, involving a ground-based version of the sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missile, was intended less as a technology assessment than as a political statement--to demonstrate the Pentagon's determination to rapidly field an array of treaty-non-compliant weapons and put China and Russia on the defensive. Unless halted by Congress, this drive will almost certainly spark a dangerous new arms race and dramatically narrow the "firebreak" between conventional and nuclear war. ... Read more

Trump Aide And Oval Office 'Gatekeeper' Fired For 'Leaking'
ZeroHedge | staff | 08/30/19

Madeleine Westerhout, the now-former special assistant to the president and director of Oval Office operations, had worked for the president since the transition. But she shared details about Trump, his family and his time in the White House during an off-the-record chat with reporters.

Once her actions had been discovered, the administration decided that "immediate termination" was the only worthwhile punishment for leaking. She would not be returning to work on Friday. ... Read more

    1. In Germany, the Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, is expected to win key state elections in Saxony and Brandenburg. 4. French President Emanuel Macron prioritized wildfires in the Amazon rainforest at the G7. The member countries agreed to a $22 million fund to fight fires raging in the rainforest. However, a row between Macron and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro initially derailed the aid. Macron suggested that Brazil did not have sovereignty over the rainforest. Bolsonaro then said Brazil would only accept the aid if Macron withdrew the claim.
  5. Meanwhile, a U.S. cyberattack carried out in June hurt Iran's ability to target oil tankers. The attack targeted a database run by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps that was reportedly involved in an attack on an American oil tanker earlier this year.

Tariffs threaten to reshape tech industry
Axios | Ina Fried | 08/29/19

Even as businesses continue to protest the growing U.S.-China trade war, the tariffs are already causing companies in both countries to rethink how and where they do business.

Why it matters: For all their differences, the U.S. and Chinese tech industries remain very interdependent -- each country contributes a great deal of business to the other's economy.

Where it stands: What tech companies want most is an end to hostilities, as evidenced by a letter issued Wednesday by more than 150 business groups calling for an end to the tariffs. However, the ongoing trade war has both sides eyeing how to lessen their dependence on the other. ...

  1. Apple remains highly dependent on China for manufacturing and it is also a key market for iPhone sales. Nearly all iPhones are made there, with the exception of phones sold in Brazil and India, where laws impose huge tariffs on imported electronics.
  2. Huawei, subject to a near-total ban on business with the U.S., finds itself not only shut out of a key market, but scrambling to find new options for chips and operating systems, among other components. The company faces the prospect of launching its first high-end smartphone without Google's apps and services.

When Ilhan Omar Is Accused of Anti-Semitism, It's News. When a Republican Smears Muslims, There's Silence.
TheIntercept | Mehdi Hasan | 08/28/19

"IT'S ALL ABOUT the Benjamins, baby." That is, of course, what Rep. Ilhan Omar famously tweeted on February 10, in response to a tweet from my colleague Glenn Greenwald decrying "how much time U.S. political leaders spend defending a foreign nation" -- namely, the state of Israel. Then, when a journalist followed up by asking Omar who she believed was "paying American politicians to be pro-Israel," the congresswoman tweeted: "AIPAC!"

The freshman Democrat from Minnesota "unequivocally" apologized the very next day, saying that she was grateful to Jewish allies and colleagues who were educating her "on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes" and insisting that she never intended to "offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole."

But it was too late. With those two (since-deleted) tweets, Omar kicked off a political and media firestorm that lasted for weeks and saw her condemned and castigated by, among others, cable news pundits, newspaper op-ed columnists, Jewish community groups, Donald Trump, congressional Republicans, and even the leaders and members of her own party. ... A Top Financier of Trump and McConnell is a Driving Force Behind Amazon Deforestation
TheIntercept | Ryan Grim | 08/27/19

TWO BRAZILIAN FIRMS owned by a top donor to President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are significantly responsible for the ongoing destruction of the Amazon rainforest, carnage that has developed into raging fires that have captivated global attention.

The companies have wrested control of land, deforested it, and helped build a controversial highway to their new terminal in the one-time jungle, all to facilitate the cultivation and export of grain and soybeans. The shipping terminal at Miritituba, deep in the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Pará, allows growers to load soybeans on barges, which will then sail to a larger port before the cargo is shipped around the world.

The Amazon terminal is run by Hidrovias do Brasil, a company that is owned in large part by Blackstone, a major U.S. investment firm. Another Blackstone company, Pátria Investimentos, owns more than 50 percent of Hidrovias, while Blackstone itself directly owns an additional roughly 10 percent stake. Blackstone co-founder and CEO Stephen Schwarzman is a close ally of Trump and has donated millions of dollars to McConnell in recent years.

"Blackstone is committed to responsible environmental stewardship," the company said in a statement. "This focus and dedication is embedded in every investment decision we make and guides how we conduct ourselves as operators. In this instance, while we do not have operating control, we know the company has made a significant reduction in overall carbon emissions through lower congestion and allowed the more efficient flow of agricultural goods by Brazilian farmers." ... The Fantasy Of Central Bank "Growth" Is Finally Imploding
Zerohedge | | 08/28/19

It was such a wonderful fantasy: just give a handful of bankers, financiers and corporations trillions of dollars at near-zero rates of interest, and this flood of credit and cash into the apex of the wealth-power pyramid would magically generate a new round of investments in productivity-improving infrastructure and equipment, which would trickle down to the masses in the form of higher wages, enabling the masses to borrow and spend more on consumption, powering the Nirvana of modern economics: a self-sustaining, self-reinforcing expansion of growth.

But alas, there is no self-sustaining, self-reinforcing expansion of growth; there are only massive, increasingly fragile asset bubbles, stagnant wages and a New Gilded Age as the handful of bankers, financiers and corporations that were handed unlimited nearly free money enriched themselves at the expense of everyone else. ... Queen Elizabeth II approves U.K. government's request to suspend Parliament
Axios | staff | 08/28/19

Queen Elizabeth II has approved a request from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government to suspend Parliament when it returns from its summer recess until it can lay out its plans with a traditional Queen's Speech on Oct. 14, per the BBC.

Why it matters: While the request is largely standard process for a new administration -- the Queen's Speech is akin to an incoming State of the Union -- these are not standard times. The length of the suspension is longer than usual, and Johnson's opposition would have little time to use parliamentary procedure to stop a no-deal Brexit. Assuming that negotiations with the European Union remain stalled, it means that the U.K. will likely either crash out of the bloc on Oct. 31 -- or face a snap general election called by Johnson's opposition. ... American Farmers Are Paying A Price For Trump's Tariffs | 1a.org | 08/28/19 | 1hr
As President Donald Trump's trade war with China continues to escalate, American agricultural exports to China are slowing down. But some farmers and their advocates say that if something isn't done soon, the conflict could hasten the decline of the family farm.

Despite the president's repeated claims that "farmers are starting to do great again," the data show that's incorrect. The United States' agricultural exports to China totaled $24 billion in 2014. In 2018, that amount dwindled to $9.1 billion. So far in 2019, farm bankruptcies are up 13 percent this year from last year, according to the American Farm Bureau.

In an effort to help the industry through a tough time, the Trump administration authorized $12 billion in aid to farmers in 2018. They then announced an additional $16 billion in May of this year. However, the rescue funds have done little to quell farmer anger.

It's been more than a year since the trade war began. The president initially decided to pressure Beijing as part of his strategy to help manufacturers and other companies who had supposedly lost profit due to China's trade policies.

David Koch's Most Significant Legacy is the Election of Donald Trump
TheIntercept | Lee Fang | 08/26/19

DAVID KOCH, the fossil fuel industry billionaire who passed away on August 23 at the age of 79, spent the second half of his life building a political power structure alongside his brother Charles that radically reshaped society and set the conditions for the rise of President Donald Trump.

Many obituaries published in recent days examine Koch's history of polluting the environment and political system, how the donor network he helped lead mobilized opposition to addressing climate change, transformed our election laws to allow unlimited secret spending by the very rich, and systematically fought any regulation, labor reform, or tax viewed as a threat to the corporate power elite.

Yet Koch's most visible accomplishment is the current occupant of the White House -- a legacy largely unrecognized, and one that goes well beyond any other single triumph in his life. ... Read more

Axios | Alayna Treene | 08/27/19

President Trump's net approval rating has plunged in every key battleground state since taking office in January 2017, according to Morning Consult's tracking poll.

Why it matters: These are the states that Republicans and Democrats are vying for in 2020, and where, as of now, the campaigns think the presidential election will be decided, according to conversations with several Trump and Democratic campaign staffers.

In addition to the key purple states -- Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin -- that both sides recognize as targets, the Trump campaign has its sights set on Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire and New Mexico, all states Trump lost in 2016, several campaign officials said. ... Read more

Trump's China bind
Axios | Jonathan Swan | 08/23/19

Sources close to President Trump tell Axios that the White House is in a China bind: A trade deal with China is "tough to improbable" in this deteriorating environment, with escalating security tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Why it matters: The biggest tool Trump has to pump the economy and the markets is a trade deal with China. But if anything, senior administration officials have turned harder against China in recent weeks.

This has less to do with trade than it does with national security, according to senior administration officials and sources briefed on the president's thinking:

  1. U.S. intelligence officials are worried about Hong Kong further deteriorating, and about the risk of the Chinese military overreaching in Hong Kong -- and perhaps even in Taiwan.
  2. Lots of members of Congress care about the U.S. protecting Taiwan from Chinese aggression, and Trump has enraged Beijing by increasing military sales to the Taiwanese from the Obama era.
  3. And national security adviser John Bolton is a strong advocate for Taiwan. ...

Brazil's Bolsonaro Defiant As Global Worry Over Amazon Fires Escalates
HP | AP/Marcelo Silva de Sousa | 08/23/19

Amid global concern about raging fires in the Amazon, Brazil's government complained Thursday that it is being targeted in smear campaign by critics who contend President Jair Bolsonaro is not doing enough to curb widespread deforestation.

The threat to what some call "the lungs of the planet" has ignited a bitter dispute about who is to blame during the tenure of a leader who has described Brazil's rainforest protections as an obstacle to economic development and who traded Twitter jabs on Thursday with France's president over the fires.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the wildfires an international crisis and said the leaders of the Group of 7 nations should hold urgent discussions about them at their summit in France this weekend. "Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest -- the lungs which produces 20% of our planet's oxygen -- is on fire," Macron tweeted. ... Read more

The largest swaths of the Amazon rainforest, located in Brazil and Peru, are burning at the highest rates since records began in 2013 -- an increase of 84% compared to the same period last year, according to INPE, Brazil's National Institute for Space Research.

What's happening: On Tuesday, "Inpe registered a new fire roughly every minute" across Brazil, the Wall Street Journal reports. 2019's sharp increase is largely due to illegal loggers "burning newly cleared land for cattle ranching and agricultural use," according to environmental experts. ... Why the Democratic National Committee Must Change the Rules and Hold a Climate Debate
A girl holds a sign that reads "pull the emergency brake" at a ceremony to commemorate the Okjökull glacier in Iceland, on Aug. 18, 2019
TheIntercept | Naomi Klein | 08/21/19

DEAR MEMBERS OF THE DNC:

Your meeting in San Francisco this weekend takes place against a backdrop that is literally on fire. You are gathering one month after the hottest month ever recorded in human history. You are meeting on the same week that smoke from a record number of wildfires in the Amazon rainforest turned day into night in the Brazilian megapolis of São Paulo. And you are meeting just days after Iceland's prime minister led her country in its first funeral service for a major glacier lost to climate change.

This is the terrifying context in which you will vote on a series of resolutions to determine whether the presidential primaries will include a dedicated debate about the climate emergency. Not the already scheduled climate "forum" or climate "town hall," which will surely be fascinating for those who seek them out -- but a formal televised debate among the top candidates vying to lead your party and the country.

I am writing to add my voice to the hundreds of thousands of others who have called on you to use your power to turn that debate into a reality.

Many of you are already on board, including the chairs of several state parties, but you are up against some powerful opponents. Let's take on their two main counterarguments in turn. ... ...

More immediately, climate breakdown is already pouring fuel on every evil that humans are capable of conjuring, from deadly wars to femicide to unmasked white supremacy and colonialism. Indeed, President Donald Trump is currently throwing a tantrum because he is being denied what he perceives as the United States's manifest destiny to purchase the Indigenous-governed territory of Greenland, which has become increasingly valuable because of the wealth made accessible by melting ice. In short, there is nothing singular about planetary breakdown -- it encompasses, quite literally, everything. ... Read more

Trump, QAnon and an impending judgment day: Behind the Facebook-fueled rise of The Epoch Times
ABC News | Brandy Zadrozny and Ben Collins | 08/20/19

By the numbers, there is no bigger advocate of President Donald Trump on Facebook than The Epoch Times.

The small New York-based nonprofit news outlet has spent more than $1.5 million on about 11,000 pro-Trump advertisements in the last six months, according to data from Facebook's advertising archive -- more than any organization outside of the Trump campaign itself, and more than most Democratic presidential candidates have spent on their own campaigns.

Those video ads -- in which unidentified spokespeople thumb through a newspaper to praise Trump, peddle conspiracy theories about the "Deep State," and criticize "fake news" media -- strike a familiar tone in the online conservative news ecosystem. The Epoch Times looks like many of the conservative outlets that have gained followings in recent years. But it isn't.

Behind the scenes, the media outlet's ownership and operation is closely tied to Falun Gong, a Chinese spiritual community with the stated goal of taking down China's government. ... Read more

In August of 1619, a ship came to Point Comfort, in the English colony of Virginia. Over 20 enslaved African people, brought from what is now Angola, were on that ship. Once the ship landed, the colonists bought them as their property.

This sale ushered in an era of American slavery whose effects still endure today.

400 years later, the remnants of a once-formal system of racial hierarchy still play a defining role in the U.S.

The New York Times marked the anniversary of the beginning of slavery in America with a series of essays and poetry. These articles tackle music, health, professional sports, and the history of American democracy. ... ...

Members of the media have taken excursions to the heartland to try to get back in touch with rural America, after it seemed much of the country was taken by surprise by how much now-President Donald Trump's messaging resonated while on the campaign trail.

But critics of this type of reporting suggest that these pieces pander to workers using racist rhetoric, or soft-pedal factual inaccuracies in the name of "getting to know these folks."

Plus, the American desire for the heartland extends to our own homes. If they could live anywhere they wished, Americans would choose to live in a rural location, according to a U.S. Census Bureau poll.

What do we get wrong about rural Americans, and the issues that affect them? And why are some people choosing to move back to the rural spaces where they grew up?

Mike Pompeo Has Extreme Views on Muslims -- and Liberals Don't Seem to Care
TheIntercept | Mehdi Hasan | 08/20/19

ON JUNE 11, 2013, not long after the Boston Marathon bombings, a Republican congressman from Kansas took to the floor of the House of Representatives. "It's been just under two months since the attacks in Boston, and in those intervening weeks, the silence of Muslim leaders has been deafening," began Mike Pompeo, before going on to claim that "silence has made these Islamic leaders across America potentially complicit in these acts and, more importantly still, those that may well follow."

Pompeo's remarks were "false and irresponsible," as the Council on American Islamic Relations demonstrated at the time. Every major Muslim organization in the United States had put out a statement condemning the horrific terror attacks in Boston within hours of the blasts. Democrat Keith Ellison, one of only two Muslims members of Congress back in 2013, complained to Pompeo on the House floor -- but the Republican refused to apologize and doubled down on his smear. ... Anthony Scaramucci Says He Was 'Wrong' About Trump In Blistering Washington Post Op-Ed
HP | Nick Visser | 08/20/19

The Mooch said he isn't "seeking absolution," but felt it was time to warn voters that Trump shouldn't be re-elected.

"I'm not seeking absolution. I just want to be part of the solution," Scaramucci, who was fired in July 2017 after just 11 days on the job, wrote in The Washington Post. "The negatives of Trump's demagoguery now clearly outweigh the positives of his leadership, and it is imperative that Americans unite to prevent him from serving another four years in office."

Trump and Scaramucci have been exchanging barbs for weeks as the former aide went on a sweeping media blitz. Scaramucci compared the president to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on Axios, called him a "jackass" and a "paper tiger" in Vanity Fair and told MSNBC that Trump's recent efforts to address a spate of mass shootings were a "catastrophe." He also predicted that Trump would drop out of the 2020 presidential race by March as he realized the tide of discontent had grown against him. ... Read more

The new threat to capitalism
Axios | Steve LeVine | 08/20/19

In what would have been widely dismissed as absurd even a year ago, a mainstream consensus has suddenly swept the world that the core of the global economic system has gone terribly awry, requiring a basic shakeup of capitalism.

The big picture: But the problem may be far more fundamental than an excess of human ruthlessness, as many believe. Instead, experts say, capitalism is under another, more intractable assault -- by inexorable long-term population trends that may kill the ability of economies to grow.

As we have reported, a reckoning has emerged for capitalism as practiced -- people across the U.S., Europe and elsewhere say something is fundamentally wrong with their living standards and the size of companies, and CEOs and politicians suddenly believe that they must act.

In an announcement yesterday, 181 of the top U.S. CEOs said they are changing their business objective -- rather than solely seeking to satisfy shareholders, they will consider the desires of other constituencies such as communities and employees.

And in a report, the WSJ writes that U.S. state attorneys general plan to proceed with a probe of big tech companies for alleged anti-competitive behavior. ... Read more

Shareholders To Stakeholders: Why Business Leaders Are Shifting Focus | 1a.org | 08/20/19 | 1hr
A group of CEOs from major U.S. corporations released a statement saying that shareholder value is no longer its primary focus.

Instead, the Business Roundtable's member companies are shifting their practices to line up with their new definition of the "purpose of a corporation." The statement emphasizes investing in employees, supporting communities, dealing ethically with suppliers and providing customers with value.

Businesses play a vital role in the economy by creating jobs, fostering innovation and providing essential goods and services. Businesses make and sell consumer products; manufacture equipment and vehicles; support the national defense; grow and produce food; provide health care; generate and deliver energy; and offer financial, communications and other services that underpin economic growth. While each of our individual companies serves its own corporate purpose, we share a fundamental commitment to all of our stakeholders.

The statement was signed by General Motors' Mary Barra, Apple's Tim Cook, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Bank of America's Brian Moynahan and many more.

Why climate change is so hard to tackle: The global problem
Axios | Amy Harder | 08/19/19

Democratic presidential hopefuls are calling for aggressive action to reduce heat-trapping emissions, while nations are facing pressure to ramp up commitments ahead of a major United Nations summit next month.

The big picture: Despite that fervor, progress on climate change remains elusive. We have cultivated a deep dependence on fossil fuels that have been driving Earth's temperature up for more than a century, creating a problem whose mostly negative impacts are unfolding over more centuries.

Global (In)action | It's rational for an individual country not to drastically reduce greenhouse gases, given most economies are heavily based on energy resources that emit them. Yet, if all nations act that way -- indeed, that's what's happening -- most countries would eventually be worse off due to the cumulative impacts of all our emissions.

Put another way, what's better for each individual country in isolation is actually worse for the planet as a whole. Conversely, what is worse for each individual country, over time would be better for the planet. ... Read more

"United States" to Imperial America | TRNN | 08/19/19 | 39:55
The global expanse of US military bases is well-known; but it's actual territorial empire is largely hidden. The true map of America is not taught in our schools. Note: There are well over 800 military bases.

How to Hide an Empire by Daniel Immerwahr

How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

Antiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism -- and, even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. At it's core, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its warped logic extends beyond race, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors to the way we treat people of different sexes, gender identities, and body types. Racism intersects with class and culture and geography and even changes the way we see and value ourselves. In How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi takes readers through a widening circle of antiracist ideas--from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilites -- that will help readers see all forms of racism clearly, understand their posionous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves.

Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science with his own personal story of awakening to antiracism. This is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond the awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a just and equitable society.

Advance praise for How to Be an Antiracist

"A combination of memoir and extension of [Kendi's] towering Stamped from the Beginning . . . Never wavering . . . Kendi methodically examines racism through numerous lenses: power, biology, ethnicity, body, culture, and so forth. . . . This unsparing honesty helps readers, both white and people of color, navigate this difficult intellectual territory... Essential."-- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"In this sharp blend of social commentary and memoir . . . Kendi is ready to spread his message, his stories serving as a springboard for potent explorations of race, gender, colorism, and more. . . . With Stamped From the Beginning, Kendi proved himself a first-rate historian. Here, his willingness to turn the lens on himself marks him as a courageous activist, leading the way to a more equitable society." -- Library Journal (starred review)

Acknowledging Racism Is A Good Start. But It's Only The First Step. | 1a.org | 08/19/19 | 1hr
President Donald Trump has called himself "the least racist person" in the world, while a 2018 poll found a majority of Americans consider him to be a racist.

Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University, wants to have a different conversation. In his new book, "How to Be an Antiracist," he proposes a new way of thinking about countering racism:

What's the problem with being "not racist"? It is a claim that signifies neutrality: "I am not a racist, but neither am I against it." But there is no neutrality in the racism struggle. The opposite of "racist" isn't "not racist." It is "antiracist." What's the difference? One either endorses the idea of a racial hierarchy as a racist or racial equality as an antiracist. One either believes problems are rooted in groups of people, as a racist, or locates the roots of problems in power and policies, as an antiracist. One either allows racial inequities to persevere, as a racist, or confronts racial inequities, as an antiracist.

Greenland Responds To Trump: "We're Not For Sale"
ZeroHedge | staff | 08/16/19

Greenland's government told President Donald Trump on Friday that the island was "not for sale" following reports the president has entertained the idea of trying to buy the autonomously government Danish territory.

Notably, the US had reportedly proposed to buy Greenland from Denmark in 1946 for $100 million, but Denmark balked.

Buying Greenland would make some strategic sense from a military perspective, according to some sources quoted in the press. For example, the US currently maintains a large military base, the Thule Air Base, in Greenland. It is the US military's northernmost base, situated 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle. And Beijing has also been eyeing the island as a key strategic asset in the battle for dominance in the Arctic. ... Read more

Hong Kong standoff threatens its status as a global financial gateway
Axios | Dan Primack | 08/16/19

The deteriorating political situation in Hong Kong threatens to severely muddy the financial gateway between East and West.

The state of play: If the protesters succeed in maintaining, or even furthering, "one country, two systems" governance, then it likely would keep global capital flowing through Hong Kong. But it's unclear how China can possibly allow that to happen without eroding its authoritarian bonafides on the mainland, and almost any crackdown would be viewed as ripping down the legal fabric that made Hong Kong a financial powerhouse in the first place. ... Central banking's brave new world
Axios | Dion Rabouin | 08/16/19

The European Central Bank is leading the charge in the next wave of central bank stimulus measures, but experts and former central bankers argue it will be insufficient to deal with the looming global downturn.

Why it matters: Central banks see that the global economy is in trouble and they are stepping in to act, but are responding to new problems with old solutions. The eurozone already has negative interest rates and the ECB already has spent trillions buying bonds in an attempt to stimulate the economy. In spite of these efforts, major European economies have been unable to generate inflation or growth that's even close to their targets for years.

What's happening: ECB governing board member Olli Rehn said the central bank will announce a fresh package of "impactful and significant" stimulus at its September meeting that's expected to include "substantial" bond purchases as well as cuts to the ECB's already-negative interest rate, WSJ reported. ... Powell Issues Gag Order To Fed Presidents: Report

According to the Spectator, chair Powell has banned any public appearances by any Fed Board member, noting that "appearances at conferences have been canceled, all scheduled interviews have been abandoned and any comments on or off the record are outlawed."

Robert Reich Issues Dire Warning About 'Sugar High' Of Donald Trump's Economic Policies
HP | Lee Moran | 08/15/19

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich on Wednesday broke down why he believes two of President Donald Trump's policies could ultimately contribute to tipping the U.S. economy into a recession. Reich, who served under President Bill Clinton, noted on MSNBC's "The Beat with Ari Melber" how the Trump administration's 2017 tax cut for the rich had given the stock markets a "kind of sugar high."

"The second thing is China. This trade war with China, not only is there no strategy, but it also is extremely dangerous," said Reich. "This is the largest and second-largest economies in the entire world. And to have them going at each other is dangerous for the whole world economy."

"This is a president who not only doesn't know details, but he lies about the details he does know," Reich said. "No, there's not going to be any focus. There's no economic strategy. There's nobody around him capable of even advising him and having him listen to on economic strategy." ... Read more

'No Blame?' ABC News finds 36 cases invoking 'Trump' in connection with violence, threats, alleged assaults.
ABC News | Mike Levine | 08/14/19

President Donald Trump has repeatedly refused to accept any responsibility for inciting violence in American communities, dismissing critics who have pointed to his rhetoric as a potential source of inspiration for some citizens acting on even long-held beliefs of bigotry and hate.

"I think my rhetoric brings people together," he said last week, four days after a 21-year-old allegedly posted an anti-immigrant screed online and then allegedly opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring dozens of others.

But a nationwide review conducted by ABC News has identified at least 36 criminal cases where Trump was invoked in direct connection with violent acts, threats of violence or allegations of assault.

What An Inverted Yield Curve Could Mean For The U.S. Economy And Your Wallet | 1a.org | 08/15/19 | 1hr
A financial measurement known as the yield curve inverted on Wednesday morning, causing sections of the financial (and political) press to signal concern for the U.S. economy.

Usually trending upward, the yield curve's inversion means that the prices of different kinds of U.S. Treasury bonds, when graphed, are going to arrange themselves in an unusual way, which should have policymakers worried, according to Vox.

So for the curve to invert implies that investors are forecasting that something unusual will happen. Something that will push future interest rates down low enough to justify long-term yields being low despite the risks. Something like a future collapse in private sector investment demand that makes government borrowing cheap. Or something like a series of Federal Reserve moves to try to reduce interest rates and spur more economic activity. n other words, a future recession.

Recession Warnings Grow As Stocks Slide Following Weak Economic Data From China, Germany

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks sank Wednesday after the bond market threw up one of its last remaining warning flags on the economy. The yield on the 10-year Treasury briefly dropped below the two-year Treasury's yield Wednesday morning. It's rare for short-term yields to rise above longer-term ones, and when it happens, market watchers call it "an inverted yield curve" and brace for the possibility of a recession hitting in a year or two.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped as much as 475 points in the first few minutes of trading before recouping some of its losses. Weak economic data around the world also unnerved investors, who flipped back into selling mode after driving a rally Tuesday on hopeful signals that the U.S.-China trade war may not be worsening so much.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, shrank 0.1% in the spring from the first three months of the year due to the global trade war and troubles in the auto industry. Data from China also showed that factory output, retail spending and investment weakened in July for the world's second-largest economy. ... Read more

We humans have done for the glaciers. Almost every glacier on the planet has stopped growing and most are shrinking at an alarming rate. Ok Glacier is the first in Iceland to be formally declared dead ice. In the Himalayas, Greenland, the Alps and Iceland, the glaciers are all melting. China's Hong Kong checkmate
Axios | Dave Lawler | 08/14/17

Images of Chinese troops massing near Hong Kong have led to fears of an impending crackdown on pro-democracy protesters -- but China's next move will be dangerous, no matter what it is.

The big picture: Allowing Hong Kong's dramatic displays of dissent to rage on is intolerable for the Communist Party. But if China attempts another crackdown on the scale of Tiananmen Square 30 years ago, it would prompt a global backlash and risk steep economic repercussions. ... Read more

At least seven people are dead in the Russian city of Sarov after a mysterious explosion. After a disinformation campaign, the Russian government confirmed the deaths happened at a military test site.

The American government now suspects that the blast, which occurred last Thursday, was caused by a nuclear weapons test, according to The New York Times

More from them: But United States intelligence officials have said they suspect the blast involved a prototype of what NATO calls the SSC-X-9 Skyfall. That is a cruise missile that Mr. Putin has boasted can reach any corner of the earth because it is partially powered by a small nuclear reactor, eliminating the usual distance limitations of conventionally fueled missiles.

The great global decoupling
Axios | Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen | 08/13/19

All signs point to a decades-long cold war with China, one reshaping global alliances, politics and economies.

Why it matters: The trade war is but a very small skirmish in a much bigger and wider battle for global dominance. It's easier to see this cold war turn hot than turn off. And, for the first time, you can see the possibility of China and America decoupling -- creating two distinct, rival global systems and power structures.

The big picture: Beyond trade, the two superpowers are competing on intellectual property and technological mastery, political influence across the developing world via economic assistance (China's Belt and Road Initiative), diplomatic agreements, multinational institutions (Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank) and military sales (missiles, subs, drones, training). ... Despite massive amounts of money being pumped into the economy by both fiscal and monetary policy, U.S. growth is slowing, not accelerating.

Why it matters: Last year Congress signed a 2-year agreement to increase spending $300 billion, in part to pull the economy out of its slow-growth malaise following the financial crisis and put the U.S. back on track for 3% annual growth or higher.

Business Group Spending on Lobbying in Washington is at Least Double What's Publicly Reported
TheIntercept | Andrew Perez, Abigail Luke, Tim Zelina | 08/06/19

INFLUENTIAL CORPORATE TRADE organizations and nonprofits spent $535 million on lobbying in 2017 and as much as another $675 million on unregulated efforts to influence public policy, according to a two-month investigation.

The figures, taken together, highlight how business interests can exploit loopholes in lobbying rules, which don't cover many staples of modern influence campaigns, such as strategic consulting, broadcast advertising, media relations, social media posts, and polling -- or even the financing of astroturf campaigns.

MapLight reviewed tax returns from almost 100 trade organizations and nonprofits to identify unregulated spending on items described as "advocacy," "consulting," "contributions," "coalitions," "consortiums," "government affairs," "communications," "programs," "special projects," "dues," "memberships," and "subscriptions."

The $1.2 billion in combined spending demonstrates the increasing power of tax-exempt trade groups known as 501(c)(6) organizations. The Internal Revenue Service has approved thousands of applications for nonprofit status for such organizations, ranging from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which spends more on lobbying than any other trade organization, to the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists. Their influence has grown substantially since the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision allowed them to spend directly on politics. ... Read more

  1. Over the weekend, mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, reignited debates that surface each time the nation reels from such atrocities: about gun control, about mental health, about domestic terrorism. One listener, Sandy from Houston, called in and said she ran errands with her daughter Monday morning and told her she was nervous to go into a Walmart, where the El Paso shooting took place. Her high school-aged daughter responded: "Try having to go to school."
  2. We're also following another spate of violence from the weekend that got much less attention. In Chicago, seven people were killed and at least 55 were wounded by gunfire between Friday evening and Monday morning -- the city's worst weekend of gun violence this year.
  3. We also bring you the latest on the administration's immigration policy. This week, ICE officials raided work sites across the state of Mississippi, arresting nearly 700 people the agency says are undocumented immigrants. President Donald Trump had hoped to head into the 2020 campaign season as the world's consummate deal-maker. He may instead enter his reelection campaign not just empty-handed, but vulnerable to the charge that his policies have helped sow chaos across the globe.

His trade war with China keeps escalating, with mounting costs to the U.S. economy. Diplomatic overtures to Iran and North Korea have so far failed to yield the president's desired outcome. Jared Kushner's Middle East peace plan, two years in the making, is nowhere to be seen. The big picture: Trump's initial pick to replace Coats -- Rep. In India, residents of southern India's biggest metropolitan area have been suffering because of water scarcity.

From the AP: In Chennai, a coastal city of about 10 million and the capital of Tamil Nadu state, rapid development and rampant construction have overtaxed a once-abundant natural water supply, forcing the government to spend huge sums to desalinate sea water, bring water by train from hundreds of kilometers (miles) away and deploy an army of water trucks to people whose household taps have suddenly run dry.

The water shortfall is disrupting business at all levels, from the gleaming, 45-kilometer (28-mile) IT Corridor to the neighborhood tea shop. Some workers have been asked not to report to the office while others have had to give up a day's wages to wait for the erratic water truck that makes daily deliveries.

The Treasury Department's designation came after China allowed its currency to weaken to an 11-year low.

As NPR reported: China's devaluation came days after Trump announced plans to level new tariffs on some $300 billion in Chinese imports, beginning in September. China also responded by suspending its already limited purchases of U.S. agricultural products.

President Trump's contentious relationship with China began on the campaign trail in June 2016, when he expressed his intention to impose tariffs on China, if elected. By July 2017, talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping devolved and the relationship between the two countries on the issue of trade has been in decline ever since.

El Paso Gunman's Fear of a Migrant "Invasion" Echoes Donald Trump and Fox News
TheIntercept | Robert Mackey | 08/05/19

THE WHITE SUPREMACIST who killed at least 22 people in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday appears to have been driven by a racist conspiracy theory -- that the United States is under "invasion" by migrants and asylum-seekers from Central America -- which has been repeated again and again on Fox News broadcasts, and amplified by that network's most powerful viewer, President Donald Trump.

As Brandon Friedman, a former Obama administration official, pointed out, it is hard to read even the first page of the suspected gunman's manifesto, about the supposed "Hispanic invasion" he aimed to repel, without hearing echoes of the toxic rhetoric Trump absorbs from Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson and then passes on at rallies and in tweets. ... Trump Signs Bill Revoking Obama-Era Gun Checks for People With Mental Illnesses
NBCNews & USNews | Ali Vitali | older 02/28/17

The new law nullifies an Obama-backed rule that added people with mental illnesses to the national background check database.

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.

The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns. ... Read more

The era of white nationalism
Axios | Jim VandeHei, Sara Fischer | 08/06/19

White nationalism -- a racist extremism that was confined to the ugly fringes for most of our lives -- is a growing major danger in America:
The big picture: Racial resentment and anxiety have been a central appeal for Donald Trump and his rhetoric among the working-class, forgotten Americans who put him over the top, and who are at the core of his re-election strategy. ...

  1. Both parties are calling out the ideology after the El Paso massacre by an Anglo who complained online of a "Hispanic invasion": George P. Bush, a Hispanic Republican who is Texas land commissioner and the grandson and nephew of former presidents, warned this weekend of "white terrorism here in the U.S."
  2. The FBI says homegrown violent extremists are now a top concern -- "a persistent, pervasive threat," Director Christopher Wray called it in April.
  3. Two weeks ago, Wray said the bureau had made 100 arrests for domestic terrorism in the past nine months, with many tied to white supremacy.

Who's Trying To Stop The Rise Of White Supremacy In America? | 1a.org | 08/06/19 | 1hr
President Trump addressed the nation Monday following mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, that left at least 31 people dead and dozens injured.

The motives of two gunmen, both white, are under investigation. Authorities say it's too early to speculate. But it has been noted, in media reports and on social media, that at least eight of those who were killed at an El Paso shopping center were Mexican nationals. The suspect, Patrick Crusius, had posted a racist, anti-immigrant screed online not long before the massacre. And among those killed in the Dayton shooting, six of the nine were black.

Trump, in his brief televised address Monday, said, "In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America."

Before he began shooting, the gunman in custody for killing at least 21 people at an El Paso Walmart posted on 8chan.

Here's what Robert Evans of BellingCat wrote about the gunman's words: There is nothing new in this killer's ramblings. He expresses fears of the same "replacement" of white people that motivated the Christchurch shooter, and notes that he was deeply motivated by that shooter's manifesto. In the article I wrote after the Poway Synagogue shooting I noted that 8channers had dedicated a great deal of time to spreading that manifesto, in an effort to inspire more shooters. The El Paso shooting is further proof that this strategy works.

America's hate problem
Axios | Mike Allen | 08/05/19

America has the world's worst gun problem. And now it's being forced to confront its hate problem.

The state of play: "I don't care about the politics right now," texted a friend who's in politics at the highest level. "I'm scared that we could look back on this as the beginning of a true catastrophe for America."

The gun problem: In the 20 years since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, the U.S. has had 88 mass shootings (each with 4 or more victims), with 736 killed.

The hate problem: In the past 18 months, white-extremist active shooters in the U.S. have been responsible for 63 deaths in 7 episodes, including attacks on a Texas Walmart, a Florida high school, a Texas high school and a Pennsylvania synagogue, a N.Y. Times graphic shows. ... Read more

Hate's Haven: How 8Chan Became a Hotbed for Killers
HP | Jesselyn Cook | 08/04/19

On Saturday morning, a gunman opened fire on shoppers in an El Paso, Texas, Walmart. Twenty-two people were killed, including a mother who was gunned down while cradling her infant son, shielding him from harm. Dozens more were injured, with many still fighting for their lives. It was one of the country's deadliest mass shootings and the deadliest massacre of Latinos in modern American history.

Shortly before the carnage unfolded, the suspect, a 21-year-old white man, is believed to have posted on 8chan -- the notorious online message board where bigotry is encouraged and celebrated en masse. There, like other violent extremists before him, he allegedly announced his plans, broadcasted his deeply hateful motivations, and urged others to follow his lead.

The 8chan post included a three-page manifesto that described Hispanic immigrants as "invaders" that need to be removed or annihilated. It also praised the Australian man who live-streamed himself fatally shooting 51 worshippers at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, as a source of inspiration. Shortly before that attack in March, the alleged Christchurch shooter posted a white nationalist manifesto on 8chan, too.

"[8chan] is a completely anonymous place, and that's exactly why it's used to stir hatred, and to tell people to commit mass murder," noted Ben Collins, an NBC extremism reporter covering the El Paso tragedy. "There is a body count associated with this website now." ...

Americans are once again left grieving and angry after two separate mass shootings over the weekend left at least 29 people dead in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

We will add the names of these cities to an already long list of communities around the country that have been traumatized by mass shootings.

That list includes: Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 first graders. The shooting at a nightclub in Thousand Oaks, California, where a man in a black trenchcoat and sunglasses killed 12 people. And a massacre on the Las Vegas Strip, in which a gunman opened fire on a large crowd and killed 58 people.

Greenland's ice sheet shrank more in past month than in average year, experts warn
TheGuardian | Jonathan Watts | 08/02/19

Unusually high temperatures are eating into ice sheets that used to be solid throughout the year, according to glaciologists, who warn this is both an amplifying cause and effect of man-made climate disruption across the globe.

Greenland -- which is home to the world's second biggest ice sheet -- is likely to have shrunk more in the past month than the average for a whole year between 2002 and now, according to provisional estimates from satellite data. Surface ice declined in July by 197 gigatonnes, equivalent to about 80m Olympic swimming pools, according to Ruth Mottram of the Danish Meteorological Institute. An additional third of that amount is likely to have been lost from glaciers and icebergs. ... Read more

Senate passes $2.7 trillion budget deal
Axios | Ursula Perano | 08/01/19

The Senate voted 67-28 to pass a $2.7 trillion budget deal Thursday that would suspend the debt ceiling through 2021, sending the package to President Trump's desk after the House passed it last week.

Why it matters: The Congressional Budget Office projected that the national debt would reach "unprecedented levels" in the next 30 years should laws remain the same. It exceeded $22 trillion in February, and the federal deficit has grown 23% this fiscal year. ... Read more

Charming but dishonest and duplicitous: Europe's verdict on Boris Johnson
TheGuardian | Jon Henley | 08/02/19

He is clever, cultivated, charming; witty, self-deprecating, wildly entertaining and oh so terribly British. Also dissembling, dishonest, dark, duplicitous, and a danger to his country and to Europe -- a poker player whose bluff is about to be called.

As Boris Johnson settles into his new role, vowing, do or die, to take the UK out of the EU without a deal in 90 days unless the 27 nations ditch an accord that took two years to negotiate, European politicians and commentators are both fascinated and appalled.

Ten Broeke has since revised his opinion. "The charm, the intellect, the confidence -- it all now looks a lot like over-confidence," he said. "A promise of simple solutions to complex problems. And it could have disastrous consequences."

The EU27 will give little, if any, ground on the withdrawal agreement, he said, and the costs of no deal are many times greater for the UK than for the EU. "So I can see only one reason Johnson might pursue it. A cynical, dark reason: new elections, to win a new mandate - putting party before country, at a truly existential moment." ... Read more

The Apprentice: Trump, Russia and the Subversion of American Democracy by Greg Miller

It has been called the political crime of the century: a foreign government, led by a brutal authoritarian leader, secretly interfering with the American presidential election to help elect the candidate of its choice. Now two-time Pulitzer Prize--winning Washington Post national security reporter Greg Miller investigates the truth about the Kremlin's covert attempt to destroy Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump win the presidency, Trump's steadfast allegiance to Vladimir Putin, and Robert Mueller's ensuing investigation of the president and those close to him.

Based on interviews with hundreds of people in Trump's inner circle, current and former government officials, individuals with close ties to the White House, members of the law enforcement and intelligence communities, foreign officials, and confidential documents, The Apprentice offers striking new information about:
  1. the hacking of the Democrats by Russian intelligence;
  2. Russian hijacking of Facebook and Twitter;
  3. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's hidden communications with the Russians;
  4. the attempt by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, to create a secret back channel to Moscow using Russian diplomatic facilities;
  5. Trump's disclosure to Russian officials of highly classified information about Israeli intelligence operations;
  6. Trump's battles with the CIA and the FBI and fierce clashes within the West Wing;
  7. Trump's efforts to enlist the director of national intelligence and the director of the National Security Agency to push back against the FBI's investigation of his campaign;
  8. the mysterious Trump Tower meeting;
  9. the firing of FBI Director James Comey;
  10. the appointment of Mueller and the investigation that has followed;
  11. the tumultuous skirmishing within Trump's legal camp;

  1. This week, 20 Democratic presidential hopefuls met for the second time on the debate stage as the party edged closer to electing its nominee to challenge President Trump. Who-- and what -- got the most attention?
    1. Tuesday night's debate belonged to the front-runners, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. But their counterparts on Wednesday, Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Senator Kamala Harris, couldn't quite replicate their dominance.
    2. Neither did badly by any means: There was no doubt that Mr. Biden beat his lackluster performance from the first debate, and Ms. Harris held her own under a barrage of attacks, likely a product of her own strong showing last time.
    3. But Wednesday's most memorable performance, the experts seemed to agree, came from Senator Cory Booker -- although so many candidates scored at least some points that strategists questioned whether the polls would move much.
  2. Meanwhile in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has blocked election security legislation, part of which would require individuals to notify the FBI if foreign governments offer election assistance.
  3. And California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a new law that says President Trump will not be listed on the state's primary ballot unless he releases his tax returns. 2. But The New York Times reports that the Taliban is no longer responsible for the majority of civilian casualties.

Afghan security forces and their American-led international allies have killed more civilians so far this year than the Taliban have, the United Nations said in a report on Tuesday, once again raising alarm that ordinary Afghans are bearing the brunt of an increasingly deadly 18-year war.
  3. And an Ebola outbreak continues to spread in the Congo. The crisis is just a year old, and efforts to fight the disease have been met with unprecedented challenges.

Greenland Is Melting Away Before Our Eyes
RollingStone | EricHolthaus | 07/31/19

Amid an ongoing heat wave, new data show the Greenland ice sheet is in the middle of its biggest melt season in recorded history. It's the latest worrying signal climate change is accelerating far beyond the worst fears of even climate scientists.

The record-setting heat wave that sweltered northern Europe last week has moved north over the critically vulnerable Greenland ice sheet, triggering temperatures this week that are as much as 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal.

Weather models indicate Tuesday's temperature may have surpassed 75 degrees Fahrenheit in some regions of Greenland, and a weather balloon launched near the capital Nuuk measured all-time record warmth just above the surface. That heat wave is still intensifying, and is expected to peak on Thursday with the biggest single-day melt ever recorded in Greenland. On August 1 alone, more than 12 billion tons of water will permanently melt away from the ice sheet and find its way down to the ocean, irreversibly raising sea levels globally. ... Read more

QAnon: An Invitation to The Great Awakening by WWG1WGA (Author)

This book is a field guide to an important chunk of reality that's been carefully hidden and wrongly discredited by the media. It reveals an extraordinary movement underway, a battle of epic proportions. Whether you know it or not, you're involved because the result of this battle will determine the fate of your children and future generations both in America and around the world. However, you may only be vaguely aware of QAnon or "Q," if at all.

If you value the truth, you will want to learn about the QAnon movement and the battle that is being waged on your behalf to protect you and your children from abuse and enslavement. The war between Good and Evil is no longer merely symbolic. Evil is being, tried and brought to justice in federal courts and military tribunals today. Criminally corrupt government leaders, celebrities, religious leaders, media figures, and corporate heads will be tried and punished for crimes involving treason, human trafficking, ritual sacrifice and unspeakable perversions.

QAnon: An Invitation to The Great Awakening tells the history of an anonymous poster on the free-speech websites 4Chan and then 8Chan and how he (or perhaps they) built a following of millions of viewers worldwide. With an insider's knowledge of the battle plan (see "The Plan to Save the World"), and "Q" level military intelligence clearance, QAnon's communications are often cryptic and coded. QAnon is a master of the Socratic method, asking questions and imploring followers to do their own research, to be logical and to think for themselves.

This book was written by twelve "Anons," anonymous Q followers, decoders and citizen journalists known collectively as Where We Go One We Go All (WWG1WGA). They each know a great deal about QAnon, each bringing their own unique perspective and experience. Together they give you an overview that may encourage you to learn more. The one thing they are all convinced of: QAnon is not only real, but an insider with White House connections and this book offers many proofs to substantiate this claim. AI - Artificial Intelligence

AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.

The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.  It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

Nuclear weapons have come a long way and come in all types of different sizes. Some are relatively small while others are enormous, so big they boggle the mind at what they can be capable of, i.e. the Soviet 'Tsar Bomba' is/was 3,000 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb.

China Valley of Tunnels

China Valley of Tunnels

A report written by a Georgetown University team led by Phillip Karber conducted a three-year study to map out China’s complex tunnel system, which stretches 5,000 km (3,000 miles). On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.

I am one of those "once" middle class, over 60, over educated, under-employed, semi retired, soon to be poor workers, that everyone is talking about.
But I have a modest standard of living so I plan to give all extra donation, beyond my immediate needs, to several of my favorite charities.
