Progressives own the first debate night Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders looked like Democrats' de facto leaders and policymakers last night, in the opening half of the party's back-to-back Debate 2. The state of play: The two progressives dominated the clock. Warren had the most speaking time and Sanders was second, with Pete Buttigieg third. Both spoke to Democrats who are tired of small ball.
Bernie Sanders' website Trump's Pick for Top Intelligence Job Bragged of Experience as Terror Prosecutor -- But He Doesn't Have Any JOHN RATCLIFFE, President Donald Trump's selection to replace Dan Coats as director of national intelligence, has often touted his experience as a "terrorism prosecutor" -- a label that fellow congressional Republicans and the media have uncritically adopted. That experience appears to qualify him for the top position at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which was created after 9/11 to coordinate the activities of the nation's 17 intelligence agencies. The law that established the position requires its holder to have "extensive national security expertise." But Ratcliffe, in fact, has no record of prosecuting terrorists. In the one terrorism-related case he claims to have worked on -- the prosecution of the Texas-based Muslim charity Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development -- he played only a tangential part. ... Read more Why the Fed wants higher inflation Low inflation may sound good to consumers, who like what it suggests about the prices they'll pay. But the Federal Reserve -- which will likely cite the lack of meaningful price increases as a motive for cutting interest rates today -- has reasons for concern. Why it matters: Inflation has come in below the Fed's "sweet spot" -- 2% inflation -- throughout much of the record-long economic expansion, and consumers have benefited from low prices accompanied by low borrowing costs. But Fed chair Jerome Powell has pivoted to warn of the dangers of weak inflation -- a shift from the more common fear of rising inflation, like the type of soaring prices seen in the late 1970s and early '80s. ... State Attorneys General Are Shaping National Policy, One Lawsuit At A Time | 1a.org | 07/31/19 | 1hr
Last month at the Aspen Ideas Festival, we spoke with a panel of state AGs about that very question. Here's what Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum (D) told us:
Stephen Colbert's LIVE Monologue Part 1: A Whole Lot Of Delaney Fans | Stephen Colbert | 07/31/19 | 6:04A lot of people think of us as the 'top cop.' Since I became attorney general, and maybe because I'm the first woman to be attorney general in Oregon, I gave myself a new moniker: I'm the mama bear. Looking out for my cubs, protecting my people, making sure that especially the most vulnerable in our communities are looked after. That is pretty much my mantra. And of course, taking care of our precious environment. I come from a beautiful state like many of you [...] So we're taking care of our resources. We're taking care of our people. We're looking out for harms. And we're, of course, following the rule of law. Since the president took office in 2017, at least 47 lawsuits have been filed against him by states' attorneys general -- by AGs on both sides of the aisle. The objectives range from protecting the Affordable Care Act to restoring net neutrality to freezing the Muslim travel ban to preserving abortion rights. Trump on Saturday railed against Cummings and Baltimore -- about half of which falls in the congressman's district -- calling the city "disgusting rat and rodent infested." Rather than decry or disavow the president's remarks, Trump's allies and conservative media outlets like Fox News attempted to bolster his claim by sharing photos and video of destitute and dirty portions of the Maryland metropolis. It's extremely likely that the Federal Reserve will decide to lower interest rates this year.
When the Fed cuts interest rates, it usually means it'll cost less to borrow money -- whether you're applying for a new credit card or taking out a mortgage. However, interest rate cuts aren't typically associated with a growing economy. As Ann Saphir at Reuters reminds us, the last time the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates was during "the depths of the financial crisis more than a decade ago." So what's behind the Fed's choice? Does the American economy need the support of an interest rate cut? We'll also talk about the budget bill that passed the House last week. Supporters called the legislation a signal product of divided government, a compromise with something for everyone to love or hate. Democrats touted increases in domestic spending; Republicans pointed to growth in the Pentagon budget. And lawmakers in both parties applauded the deal for ratcheting down the budget brinkmanship that characterized the first years of the Trump administration and led to the nation's longest government shutdown over 35 days this past winter. Facing warnings that the Treasury Department could run out of money to pay its bills as early as September, lawmakers voted to suspend the nation's borrowing limit until July 31, 2021, removing the threat of a catastrophic, first-ever default. But conservative Republicans expressed opposition to the deal because it increases spending by $320 billion over existing law and suspends the debt ceiling without doing anything to rein in the spiraling deficit and debt. |

Earth Overshoot Day Shows We're Tearing Through Resources Faster Than Ever July 29 marks the point at which we start to consume more than the Earth can replenish. And this date is getting earlier each year. On July 29, we cross an alarming threshold. This date marks Earth Overshoot Day, the point each year at which humanity starts to consume the world's natural resources faster than they can be replenished. It's taken us only 209 days to burn through a year's worth of resources -- everything from food and timber to land and carbon. We are using up nature 1.75 times faster than it can be replenished. To do this sustainably, we would need the resources of 1.75 Earths. These latest figures come from Global Footprint Network, an international nonprofit that calculates our annual ecological budget and the date at which we exceed it. Once we bust through this budget, we start devouring resources at an unsustainable rate. ... President Trump Gets Trolled At Turning Point USA Teen Summit | Stephen Colbert | 07/27/19 | 2:57After serving two terms as London's mayor from 2008 to 2016, Johnson tacked hard to the Right as a leader of the "Leave" campaign ahead of the Brexit vote. Although the authenticity of his commitment to that position has been questioned, frustrated Brexiteers propelled his political ascent as former Prime Minister Theresa May failed to negotiate a divorce deal both Parliament and the EU could get behind. After a privileged upbringing that included studying at the elite Eton College and at Oxford, Johnson came to prominence as an EU-bashing journalist, writing columns that helped shape anti-Brussels sentiment in the U.K. Despite a posh accent giving away his background, he has cultivated an image of a bumbling everyman. In his first day as prime minister, Johnson sacked more than half the cabinet and installed pro-Brexit loyalists. He has promised to see the U.K. out of the European Union by the Oct. 31 deadline, whether or not a deal is reached. A no-deal Brexit could mean delays at ports, shortages of medicine and other supplies and serious economic harm to the country. There's also fear it could reignite conflict over the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, since the Republic will remain an EU member country. Alert Your Book Club! Climate change: 12 years to save the planet? Make that 18 months Now it seems, there's a growing consensus that the next 18 months will be critical in dealing with the global heating crisis, among other environmental challenges. Last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported that to keep the rise in global temperatures below 1.5C this century, emissions of carbon dioxide would have to be cut by 45% by 2030. But today, observers recognise that the decisive, political steps to enable the cuts in carbon to take place will have to happen before the end of next year. The idea that 2020 is a firm deadline was eloquently addressed by one of the world's top climate scientists, speaking back in 2017. "The climate math is brutally clear: While the world can't be healed within the next few years, it may be fatally wounded by negligence until 2020," said Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, founder and now director emeritus of the Potsdam Climate Institute. ...

One of the understated headlines in last year's IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report was that global emissions of carbon dioxide must peak by 2020 to keep the planet below 1.5C.
Current plans are nowhere near strong enough to keep temperatures below the so-called safe limit. Right now, we are heading towards 3C of heating by 2100 not 1.5. As countries usually scope out their plans over five and 10 year timeframes, if the 45% carbon cut target by 2030 is to be met then the plans really need to be on the table by the end of 2020. The1a.org Last weekend, one movie roared at the box office: the reimagining of Disney's "The Lion King." | 1a.org | 07/24/19 | 1hr
Here's one review from The New York Times' A.O. Scott:There are a great many impressive moments in this film, and a few that might elicit a gasp of amazement or an appreciative burst of laughter from even a jaded viewer. For example: When Pumbaa, the flatulent warthog voiced by Seth Rogen, absent-mindedly scratches his left ear with his hind leg, I confess that I nearly wept. Not because the scene was especially touching or sad, but because of the sheer extravagant craft that had clearly gone into rendering those two seconds of reflexive animal behavior. I was nearly as moved by the efforts of a dung beetle to propel a ball of scat across a patch of desert. The digital artisans responsible for these images didn't necessarily have to do it all with such fanatical care, and the fact that they did is surely worthy of admiration.
Meanwhile... Let's See Them Aliens | Stephen Colbert | 07/23/19 | 3:37So if a movie could be judged solely on technique, "The Lion King" might qualify as a great one. And it kind of wants to be judged that way -- for its technical skin rather than its dramatic soul. The opening sequence (it doesn't seem right to call it a "shot") fools the eye in subtle and brazen ways. You might think there are real creatures mixed into the computer-generated menagerie (there aren't), but at the same time the flights of animal choreography lie beyond the skill of any trainer. More analysts are starting to believe such policies will be adopted in other places, including the U.S. "Most economies have been experiencing low inflation and low growth since the global financial crisis," Kuroda said in a speech Monday at IMF headquarters in Washington. "Japan’s experience in the long battle against deflation could provide a case study for other central banks in conducting monetary policy going forward." ... In 2003, Katharine Gun, a young specialist working for Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters, exposed a highly confidential memo that revealed the United States’ collaboration with Britain in collecting sensitive information on United Nations Security Council members in order to pressure them into supporting the Iraq invasion. Gun leaked the memo to the press, setting off a chain of events that jeopardized her freedom and safety, but also opened the door to putting the entire legality of the Iraq invasion on trial. Acclaimed Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg described Gun’s action as “the most important and courageous leak I have ever seen.†Gun’s incredible story is depicted in the new film “Official Secrets,†which premieres in the U.S. August 30. We speak with Katharine Gun; the British journalists who reported on Gun’s revelations in The Observer newspaper, Martin Bright and Ed Vulliamy; and Gavin Hood, director of “Official Secrets.â€

The northern Pacific Ocean bridges cultures and economies from western Canada and the American Northwest to East Asia and Russia’s Far East. For all their differences, communities in each of those places rely on one essential animal: salmon.
Trump Surrogates: 'Send Her Back' Chants Can't Be Racist | Stephen Colbert | 07/23/19 | 7:35But human impact has caused salmon stocks to drop dramatically, with devastating economic and environmental consequences. A proposed mine in southwestern Alaska has generated backlash, and even among environmentalists, priorities clash. The push to build hydroelectric dams -- an important source of “clean energy†-- has cut salmon off from their spawning grounds. Rahr is the subject of “Stronghold: One Man’s Quest to Save the World’s Wild Salmon,†a new book by journalist and novelist Tucker Malarkey. Study: Immigrants and their kids founded 45% of U.S. Fortune 500 companies Immigrants and their children have founded 45% of the U.S.'s Fortune 500 companies, according to a new study by New American Economy, a pro-immigration group. Why it matters: The share of the most successful and globally-recognized U.S. companies that have immigrant founders is growing, according to NAE's Hanna Siegel and Andrew Lim, while the Trump administration has tried to make it more difficult for immigrants to come to the U.S., often claiming that they take American jobs and lower wages. ...

Created in August 2016, the Facebook group is called "I'm 10-15" and boasts roughly 9,500 members from across the country. (10-15 is Border Patrol code for "aliens in custody.") The group described itself, in an online introduction, as a forum for "funny" and "serious" discussion about work with the patrol. "Remember you are never alone in this family," the introduction said. Responsible for policing the nation's southern and northern boundaries, the Border Patrol has come under intense scrutiny as the Trump administration takes new, more aggressive measures to halt the influx of undocumented migrants across the United States-Mexico border. The patrol's approximately 20,000 agents serve under the broader U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, which has been faulted for allegedly mistreating children and adults in its custody. The agency's leadership has been in turmoil, with its most recent acting chief, John Sanders, resigning last week. ...

Official Secrets Trailer (2019) - Keira Knightley | 07/12/19 | 2:15In January 2003, 28-year-old GCHQ translator Katharine Gun received an email from the US National Security Agency that would turn her world upside down. The message requested Katharine's assistance in co-ordinating an illegal US-UK spy operation which would secure UN authorisation for the Iraq invasion. Horrified, she decided to leak the information to the British press. Katharine's decision would change her life forever, as she was arrested under the Official Secrets Act whilst becoming a cause célèbre for political activists. AOC GRILLS Homeland Security Chief | TYT | 07/21/19 | 10:43
"Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grilled Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan in a House hearing Thursday on why thousands of Customs and Border Patrol officers belonged to a racist and sexist Facebook group.
The1a.org"Mr. Secretary are you aware of the ProPublica report indicating that there were about 10,000 potential current and former CBP officers in the violently racist and sexist Facebook group?" Ocasio-Cortez asked McAleenan, to which he responded in the affirmative. "Did you see the photoshopped images depicting my violent rape?" she asked. McAleenan had. ProPublica reported that the group has been around for three years and has around 9,500 members. The group's bio listed it as a forum for "funny" and "serious" discussion about work with the patrol. AOC went on to ask the DHS secretary if he was aware of posts mocking migrant children's deaths and posts planning harm to herself and Rep. Veronica Escobar(one post urged border patrol members to hurl a "burrito at these bitches" when AOC and Escobar toured facilities), to which he responded yes. There was also a post that included gruesome photoshopped images of AOC's rape. Dr. Mark Skidmore thinks the federal accounting of $21 trillion in missing money is crazy and far outside the realm of normal. So, is this a legitimate U.S. national security issue? Dr. Skidmore, who holds a PhD in Economics, says, "Yeah, and that is one of the reasons I decided to look at this. How can this be, and what does this mean? If trillions of dollars are flowing in and flowing out, it appears to be outside of our Constitution and outside of the rule of law. If that is the case, that really is troubling because it suggests that there is a layer of things happening that are outside the rule of law. I know, for example, that some activities, just for the sake of protection of the people involved in national security, have to be black budget. There is always stuff like that. Usually, it's authorized spending, and some percentage is this black budget where only a small percentage of people and some in Congress know about it, but this is way outside of that. So, I am worried about it."

Filthy Rich: The Billionaire's Sex Scandal - The Shocking True Story of Jeffrey Epstein by James Patterson
James Patterson on his investigation into Jeffrey Epstein | FOXNews | 07/09/19 | 8:35You've read the Jeffrey Epstein headlines, now get the full story. The world's bestselling author, James Patterson, has written the definitive book on the billionaire pedophile at the center of the newly unsealed federal sex crimes case. Jeffrey Epstein rose from humble origins into the New York City and Palm Beach elite. A college dropout with an instinct for numbers -- and for people -- Epstein amassed his wealth through a combination of access and skill. But even after he had it all, Epstein wanted more. That unceasing desire -- and especially a taste for underage girls --resulted in sexual-abuse charges, to which he pleaded guilty and received a shockingly lenient sentence. The Jeffrey Epstein scandal Jeffrey Epstein is a wealthy financier and one-time friend to the rich and famous, counting Donald Trump, Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton as acquaintances. In 2005 a 14-year-old girl reported that Epstein had molested her in Palm Beach. Others came forward, some of them also minors. But after plea negotiations between Epstein's legal team and the then US attorney in Miami, Alexander Acosta, Epstein served just 13 months in prison. This month he was arrested on sex trafficking charges and last week federal prosecutors claimed that lewd photographs of girls as young as 14 had been discovered in a safe in his Manhattan mansion. Epstein, 66, has pleaded not guilty. Journalist Vicky Ward tells Anushka Asthana about meeting Epstein in 2002 when she was profiling him for Vanity Fair magazine, while the Guardian's Ed Pilkington discusses the current case. ...

Heat Wave To Scorch Midwest And East Coast, Create Dangerous Conditions For Residents More than 100 local heat records are expected to fall Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. DETROIT (AP) -- The heat wave that has been roasting much of the U.S. in recent days is just getting warmed up, with temperatures expected to soar to dangerous levels through the weekend. More than 100 local heat records are expected to fall Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Most won't be record-daily highs but record-high nighttime lows, and that lack of cooling can be dangerous, meteorologists say. Temperatures in parts of the East won't drop below the mid- to upper-70s or even 80 degrees (26.7 Celsius) at night, he said. A high pressure system stretching from coast-to-coast is keeping the heat turned on. The heat and humidity are made to feel worse by the large amount of moisture in the air coming from the Gulf of Mexico, much of it left over from Hurricane Barry. The heat index, which is what the temperature feels like, should hit 110 (43.3 Celsius) in Washington, D.C., on Saturday and 109 (42.8 Celsius) in Chicago and Detroit on Friday, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of Weather Underground. Wednesday marked Washington's seventh straight day with temperatures of at least 90 degrees (32.2 Celsius), and that streak was expected to last for another five days. ... In his first year in office, President Trump removed climate change from a list of worldwide threats against the United States. But many of his military advisers believe climate change poses a higher risk than ever -- so high that it affects America's national security.
A House Divided Cannot Stand Donald Trump | Stephen Colbert | 07/17/19 | 6:48The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), for example, has radar sites along the Alaskan coast constantly scanning the skies for threats. It's one of our continent's foremost military defenses, but according to reporting for Reveal in collaboration with KUNC, the radar sites are themselves threatened, "not from the skies above, but from the environment." Retired Marine Corps Brigadier General Stephen Cheney is the CEO of American Security Project. When we asked him where climate change ranks on his list of national security threats to the U.S., he told us it's at the top. That's a question I get a lot. Sure, in the near-term, China and North Korea are a threat, clearly big threats. But in the long term -- 20, 30, 50 years out -- what's going to occur because of climate change is far more devastating. The fact is, we know that climate change is happening. We don't know what North Korea is going to do -- what Boko Haram, al-Qaida are going to do. But we know climate change is occurring. Trump's premeditated racism is central to his 2020 strategy It might seem like improvisational madness when President Trump tells American citizens in Congress to "go back" where they came from, but those close to Trump say there's a lot of calculation behind his race-baiting. American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump by Tim Alberta (07/16/19)
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump's victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president's rise based on a country's evolution and a party's collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning: They had no vision, no generation of new leaders, and no energy in the party's base. Yet Obama's forceful pursuit of his progressive agenda, coupled with the nation's rapidly changing societal and demographic identity, lit a fire under the right, returning Republicans to power and inviting a bloody struggle for the party's identity in the post-Bush era. The factions that emerged -- one led by absolutists like Jim Jordan and Ted Cruz, the other led by pragmatists like John Boehner and Mitch McConnell -- engaged in a series of devastating internecine clashes and attempted coups for control. With the GOP's internal fissures rendering it legislatively impotent, and that impotence fueling a growing resentment toward the political class and its institutions, the stage was set for an outsider to crash the party. When Trump descended a gilded escalator to announce his run in the summer of 2015, the candidate had met the moment. Only by viewing Trump as the culmination of a decade-long civil war inside the GOP--and of the parallel sense of cultural, socioeconomic, and technological disruption during that period--can we appreciate how he won the White House and consider the fundamental questions at the center of America's current turmoil. How did a party once obsessed with national insolvency come to champion trillion-dollar deficits? How did the party of compassionate conservatism become the party of Muslim bans and family separation? How did the party of family values elect a thrice-married philanderer? And, most important, how long can such a party survive? Loaded with explosive original reporting and based off hundreds of exclusive interviews--including with key players such as President Trump, Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Jim DeMint, and Reince Priebus, among many others--American Carnage takes us behind the scenes of this tumultuous period as we've never seen it before and establishes Tim Alberta as the premier chronicler of this political era. |

President Trump drew the ire of Congressional Democrats -- and many others -- over the weekend with tweets that employed time-tested racist rhetoric.
On Sunday, Trump wrote that four freshman congresswomen of color should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." During the 2016 campaign, he famously said a Mexican-American judge could not rule fairly in a fraud case involving Trump University because of his heritage. While in office, he called El Salvador, Haiti and other African nations "s -- thole countries." Despite backlash, Trump dug in, saying Monday that those who "hate our country" should leave. In the past, he's repeatedly denied being racist, calling himself "the least racist person that you have ever met."

A tough time to be a Trump supporter Conservatives who reluctantly support President Trump often try to pretend the daily outrage didn't happen, but yesterday's "go back" tweets were like his "both sides" comment on Charlottesville -- a transgression that won't instantly fade, and can't be laughed off. The bottom line: Trump is all-in on us-versus-them politics and does not care if he occasionally crosses the line into racism. Trump allies expect this to get worse, not better. What happened: Trump attacked four young, female House Democrats of color who are U.S. citizens, three of whom were born in the U.S. -- "a racist trope ... factually inaccurate," as the N.Y. Times put it. ... Read more Trump Tells Freshman Congresswomen to 'Go Back' to the Countries They Came From President Trump said on Sunday that a group of four minority congresswomen feuding with Speaker Nancy Pelosi should "go back" to the countries they came from rather than "loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States" how to run the government. Wrapped inside that insult, which was widely established as a racist trope, was a factually inaccurate claim: Only one of the lawmakers was born outside the country. Even though Mr. Trump has repeatedly refused to back down from stoking racial divisions, his willingness to deploy a lowest-rung slur -- one commonly and crudely used to single out the perceived foreignness of nonwhite, non-Christian people -- was largely regarded as beyond the pale. "So interesting to see 'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world," Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter, "now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run."... I don't even wait. When you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the pussy." But as those allegations were first surfacing, another disturbing old recording came out -- and this one featured Trump objectifying a young girl. In the 1992 recording, a 46-year-old Trump asks a little girl if she's going to go up an escalator. Then Trump turns to the camera and says, "I am going to be dating her in 10 years.

The Times reports "ICE's goal is to deport the families as quickly as possible."
The operation, backed by President Trump, had been postponed, partly because of resistance among officials at his own immigration agency. The raids, which will be conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement over multiple days, will include "collateral" deportations, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the preliminary stage of the operation. In those deportations, the authorities might detain immigrants who happened to be on the scene, even though they were not targets of the raids. |

Jeffrey Epstein Shipped Himself a 53-pound Shredder and a Carpet and Tile Extractor, Maritime Records Show JEFFREY EPSTEIN SHIPPED a shredder from the U.S. Virgin Islands to his Palm Beach home in July 2008, shortly after reaching a non-prosecution agreement with then-U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, maritime records show. Then, in March of this year, shortly after a Florida federal judge invalidated that agreement, Epstein shipped a tile and carpet extractor from the Virgin Islands to his Manhattan townhouse, the records show. Epstein, a billionaire financier, was arrested in New Jersey last Saturday on charges of running a sex trafficking ring that involved luring underage girls to his New York and Florida residences, and taking them on global flights on his airplane, dubbed the "Lolita Express." Epstein was first accused of abusing underage girls, some of them as young as 14, more than a decade ago, and he evaded prosecution potentially due to his high-profile connections. ... Read more
Sin, Sex and Subversion: How What Was Taboo in 1950s New York Became America's New Normal by David Rosen
During the tumultuous 1950s in America, sex was as threatening to the nation's moral order as communism. New York was the capital of the post-World War II world and the epicenter of a fierce culture war over music, theatre, movies, fashion, and literature, as well as birth control, homosexuality, adolescent sex, pornography, and prostitution. Over the last half-century, America's social life - especially notions of culture, sexuality, and politics - has fundamentally changed, and what were once sinful or subversive sexual practices have been integrated into the marketplace, irreversibly changing American moral values; the once illicit has become an industry of more than $50 billion. Drawing on first-person interviews, unpublished memoirs, newspaper accounts, contemporary studies, government documents, and recent scholarship, Sin, Sex & Subversion argues that "deviant" sexuality was subversive, and that unique New York "outsiders" of the 1950s set the stage for the following decades and the world we know today. In each chapter, author David Rosen examines a critical moral issue through an in-depth profile of figures such as Liberace, Samuel Roth, Bettie Page, the Rosenbergs, and others. Through these individuals, Rosen shows how those who operated outside the law or who challenged popular values, even if they were silenced in their time, ended up paving the way for a new normal. Developing hurricane threatens New Orleans levees A developing storm in the north-central Gulf of Mexico, which is expected to become a hurricane by Saturday, threatens to unleash one of the worst flood events in New Orleans' history this weekend. The big picture: Because the storm, to be named Barry, is lumbering off the coast, it's pulling copious amounts of moisture from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is poised to direct it like a firehose at Louisiana and Mississippi. The Mississippi River is already so high in the New Orleans area that heavy rain plus a storm surge could overtop the cities' river levees for the first time, flooding large parts of the city. ...

First came Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 monster storm that devastated her small fishing community in Plaquemines Parish before roaring up the Gulf Coast, killing more than 1,800 people and destroying $125 billion in property. Five years later, BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded 40 miles offshore, spewing nearly 200 million gallons of crude. The fisheries have not fully recovered more than nine years later, nor has her family. But this year may be worse. A historic slow-moving flood of polluted Mississippi River water loaded with chemicals, pesticides and human waste from 31 states and two Canadian provinces is draining straight into the marshes and bayous of the Gulf of Mexico -- the nurseries of Arnesen's fishing grounds -- upsetting the delicate balance of salinity and destroying the fragile ecosystem in the process. As the Gulf waters warm this summer, algae feed on the freshwater brew, smothering oxygen-starved marine life. ... One respite center, Catholic Charities for the Rio Grande Valley, has aided 100,000 migrants since it opened in 2014. Here's what its director, Sister Norma Pimentel, wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post that's addressed to President Trump:
In the Foxhole Vol. 2 | The Daily Show | 07/08/19 | 20:42Every day of the year, from morning to evening, families coming over the border are welcomed at our center with smiles, a warm bowl of soup, a shower and a place to rest. Most families are exhausted and afraid, carrying little more than a few belongings in a plastic bag. They come in all forms and at all ages. Few speak any English. Most are in great need of help. Some days, we see 20 people. Other days, it's closer to 300. In recent weeks, it has been very busy. Some stay a few hours, but many spend the night before heading on to new destinations. Since we opened, more than 100,000 have come through our doors. I am energized each day by the families I meet, especially the children. I am energized as well by the volunteers. They come from our local communities but also from across the United States. We witness daily how, working together, people of all faiths can focus on helping the person in front of us. Regardless of who we are and where we came from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. |

Sand and Blood: America's Stealth War on the Mexico Border by John Carlos Frey
Over the past three decades, U.S. immigration and border security policies have turned the southern states into conflict zones, spawned a network of immigrant detention centers, and unleashed an army of ICE agents into cities across the country. As award-winning journalist John Carlos Frey reveals in this groundbreaking book, the war against immigrants has been escalating for decades, fueled by defense contractors and lobbyists seeking profits and politicians--Republicans and Democrats alike--who relied on racist fear-mongering to turn out votes. After 9/11, while Americans' attention was trained on the Middle East and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the War on Terror was ramping up on our own soil--aimed not at terrorists but at economic migrants, refugees, and families from South and Central America seeking jobs, safety, and freedom in the U.S. But we are no safer. Instead, families are being ripped apart, undocumented people are living in fear, and thousands of migrants have died in detention or crossing the border. 2020 attention tracker: The might of right-wing media This tracker looks at all the attention 2020 Democrats are generating from stories on social media, but many of the most viral pieces are actually being published by conservative media, according to data from NewsWhip exclusively provided to Axios. Why it matters: The stories drive at wedge issues like immigration, redistributive policies and the culture war du jour, painting the Democratic candidates as radical leftists and serving as a testing ground for attacks from President Trump. What's going on: Over the past two weeks, most of the stories about the candidates leading our tracker that generated the most interactions on Twitter (retweets and likes) and Facebook (reactions, comments and shares) came from conservative sites: ...

The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption by Dahr Jamail
A World Without Ice | TRNN | 07/08/19 | 16:00
MoneyThe author who Jeremy Scahill calls the "quintessential unembedded reporter" visits "hot spots" around the world in a global quest to discover how we will cope with our planet's changing ecosystems. After nearly a decade overseas as a war reporter, the acclaimed journalist Dahr Jamail returned to America to renew his passion for mountaineering, only to find that the slopes he had once climbed have been irrevocably changed by climate disruption. In response, Jamail embarks on a journey to the geographical front lines of this crisis--from Alaska to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, via the Amazon rainforest--in order to discover the consequences to nature and to humans of the loss of ice. In The End of Ice, we follow Jamail as he scales Denali, the highest peak in North America, dives in the warm crystal waters of the Pacific only to find ghostly coral reefs, and explores the tundra of St. Paul Island where he meets the last subsistence seal hunters of the Bering Sea and witnesses its melting glaciers. Accompanied by climate scientists and people whose families have fished, farmed, and lived in the areas he visits for centuries, Jamail begins to accept the fact that Earth, most likely, is in a hospice situation. Ironically, this allows him to renew his passion for the planet's wild places, cherishing Earth in a way he has never been able to before. $21 Trillions Extracted Money $21 Trillion Missing from US Federal Budget with Dr. Mark Skidmore from Michigan State Univ. | Corbett Report Extras | 12/18/18 | 50:32

The increasing importance of share buybacks Share buybacks contributed about half of S&P 500 companies' earnings growth in the first quarter, a new report from JPMorgan shows. Why it matters: "This is corporate executives saying, 'Rather than investing back into the business by making capital expenditures or buying equipment, I'm just going to buy my own shares,'" says David Kelly, a global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, which published the report. Quick take: Buybacks accounted for the highest share of EPS growth since 2007, and Q1's share was almost 8 times higher than the average from 2001 to 2018, the bank found. The big picture: S&P earnings growth has been a major worry for stock analysts this year, after 2018's blowout earnings following the passage of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act. The permanent reduction in corporate taxes was backed by President Trump and Congressional Republicans as a catalyst for a boost in wages and long-term investment. The trend has gotten so strong that Moody's warned in May companies were spending more on buybacks and dividends than they were paying in taxes before the cut. ... Read more Getting Nervous? Squadrons? | 1a.org | 07/03/19 | 1hr Trump's "Salute to America" event on Thursday at the Lincoln Memorial will include flyovers, music and military demonstrations. According to The Washington Post, Trump has asked to station tanks or other armored military vehicles on the Mall for his speech to the country, but those details have not been finalized. The Secret Service say "Salute to America" will be secured by the agency and that tickets and additional security screening will be required for the event. The agency deferred to the White House about the issue of ticketing. A spokesperson for the White House said there will be a ticketed portion for VIPs, friends and family, and members of the military, but that "the entire event is open to the general public" and the general public area does not require tickets. The president's plans might be ostentatious. But even more, critics of "Salute to America" bemoan its political, partisan nature. |

Trump says he'd leave a "strong" intelligence presence in Afghanistan President Trump said he would leave a "very strong" intelligence presence in Afghanistan, in an interview broadcast on Fox News' "Tucker Carlson Tonight" on Monday. Details: In a wide ranging interview, Trump told Fox News host Tucker Carlson he wanted to pull U.S. troops out of Afghanistan. "I would like to just get out," he said. "The problem is, it just seems to be a lab for terrorists. ... I call it the Harvard of terrorists." ... The party's delegate allocation rules, combined with the large number of candidates and an early election calendar for key states, have laid the groundwork for a small group of lobbyists and party officials to potentially play a deciding role in choosing the nominee. If no single candidate receives a majority of pledged delegates in the initial vote of the convention, called the first ballot, the nomination goes to what is known as a brokered convention, in which so-called superdelegates participate in subsequent rounds of nomination votes. ... Read more Which countries achieved economic growth? And why does it matter? The average person in the world is 4.4-times richer than in 1950. But beyond the global average, how did incomes change in countries around the world? And why should we care about the growth of incomes? GDP -- Gross Domestic Product -- measures the total production of an economy as the monetary value of all goods and services produced during a specific period, mostly one year. Dividing GDP by the size of the population gives us GDP per capita to measure the prosperity of the average person in a country. Because all expenditures in an economy are someone else's income we can think of GDP per capita as the average income of people in that economy. Here at Core-Econ you find a more detailed definition. Look at the world average in the middle of the charts. The income of the average person in the world has increased from just $3,300 in 1950 to $14,574 in 2016. Despite Trump's affinities with authoritarian leaders such as India's Modi and Russia's Putin, he continues to destabilize the existing neoliberal consensus and now BRICS countries are taking up the neoliberal mantle, says Patrick Bond.

Elizabeth Warren's signature policy proposals hinges on the idea of 'blowing it up:' the Ultra-Millionaire Tax.
Archaeology From (Way, Way) Far Out | 1a.org | 06/02/19 | 1hr
To illustrate how the tax would work, Warren describes a schoolteacher who has no savings and an "heir" who has five hundred million dollars in "yachts, jewelry, and fine art." If both of them made a fifty-thousand-dollar salary, they would pay the same amount in federal income taxes. Raising income-tax rates would do nothing to fix this disparity, Warren says, and the very wealthy have numerous tax-sheltering strategies to protect them anyway. Based on estimates by two economic advisers, Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, of U.C. Berkeley, Warren's wealth tax would generate $2.75 trillion in revenue over ten years by having the I.R.S., in the words of her plan, chase down "all household assets held anywhere in the world," including "residences, closely held businesses, assets held in trust, retirement assets, assets held by minor children, and personal property with a value of $50,000 or more." Warren proposes using the money to fund universal childcare and pre-kindergarten, to forgive student-loan debt, and to finance infrastructure projects. She frequently says that, even after these initiatives are paid for, she'll have two trillion dollars left over.
In the introduction to her new book Archaeology from Space, Parcak writes: Mapping sites from space is fun, but getting to explore them is what takesme back in time, often thousands of years, to eras when people believed in different gods, spoke languages now extinct and lived in places assumed never to have been inhabited--but they were all Homo sapiens sapiens, just like us.

Europe's Jean-Claude Juncker is saving free trade As the U.S. has abandoned its role as a champion of global free trade, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has quietly been cutting deals around the globe, bolstering free trade pacts and international cooperation many feared (or hoped) were dying in the age of Trump. What's happening: At this weekend's G20 summit all eyes were on Trump and Xi's agreement to relax further trade war escalation. But perhaps lost in the shuffle was the official announcement of two major trade deals by the EU, with Vietnam and the Mercosur alliance, a bloc that includes Brazil and Argentina, South America's largest economies. Details: The agreements with Vietnam and Mercosur follow recent accords the EU has signed with Canada, Japan, Mexico and Singapore. The deals cover trade of goods and services valued at nearly $600 billion a year, which is about half the value of trade between the EU and U.S. ... HONG KONG, July 1 (Reuters) -- Hong Kong protesters stormed the Legislative Council on the anniversary of the city's 1997 return to Chinese rule on Monday amid widespread anger over planned laws that would allow extraditions to China, plunging the city deeper into chaos. Why it matters: Trump captured 81% of the evangelical vote in 2016, a huge accomplishment considering they make up roughly a quarter of the electorate and play a prominent role in swing states like Florida. According to a recent survey from the Pew Research Center, more than two-thirds of white evangelicals still support Trump, along with almost half of white Catholics and white mainline Protestants. ... Jason Rezaian, a journalist and the former Washington Post Tehran bureau chief, has some deep thoughts on President Trump's foreign policy strategy toward Iran.
Rezaian is Iranian-American. He reported there. And he spent 554 days imprisoned in Iran's Evin prison on charges of espionage. Now is the moment, if there ever was one, for Trump to use what he touts as his creative dealmaking skills to support the Iranian people, while still applying pressure on the regime and its elites. There are options available to him if he truly wants, as he said last week, to "make Iran great again." The 2015 deal designed to curb Iran's nuclear activity addressed what the United States and other world powers identified as the biggest challenge to security and peace posed by Iran. Iran was unwilling to engage on other issues, such as its missile program, human rights and support for proxies. By assigning such disproportionate urgency to a nuclear program that our own intelligence agencies believed was not moving toward weaponization, we squandered much of the leverage to address other critical issues. ... |

They believe he is on their side," the senator told the America First Agenda Summit crowd on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

AI - Artificial Intelligence
AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.
The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics
Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

Nuclear weapons have come a long way and come in all types of different sizes. Some are relatively small while others are enormous, so big they boggle the mind at what they can be capable of, i.e. the Soviet 'Tsar Bomba' is/was 3,000 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb.

911
On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The Vietnam War
Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
