Climate change: 12 years to save the planet? Make that 18 months
BBCNews | Matt McGrath | 07/24/19

Now it seems, there's a growing consensus that the next 18 months will be critical in dealing with the global heating crisis, among other environmental challenges.

Last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported that to keep the rise in global temperatures below 1.5C this century, emissions of carbon dioxide would have to be cut by 45% by 2030.

But today, observers recognise that the decisive, political steps to enable the cuts in carbon to take place will have to happen before the end of next year.

The idea that 2020 is a firm deadline was eloquently addressed by one of the world's top climate scientists, speaking back in 2017.

"The climate math is brutally clear: While the world can't be healed within the next few years, it may be fatally wounded by negligence until 2020," said Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, founder and now director emeritus of the Potsdam Climate Institute. ... Read more

Netflix's The Great Hack explores how Cambridge Analytica sold your data during the 2016 election
Vox | Alissa Wilkinson | 07/25/19

The premise: As a documentary, a thriller, and a screed, The Great Hack outlines in detail how social media sites such as Facebook and data firms such as Cambridge Analytica harvest and use people's data to sell users things -- including political candidates and agendas.

What it's about: By now, most Americans are aware -- no matter their political leanings -- that the data they give up to sites like Facebook and Twitter (as well as what they've purchased, their browsing history, and other personal data) is bought and used by companies that want to sell them things. But the extent to which this data harvesting has been used to reshape our world is, for many people, only beginning to come into focus ... Read more

U.S. GDP growth slows to 2.1% in the 2nd quarter
Axios | Courtenay Brown | 07/26/19

The U.S. economy grew at a 2.1% annualized rate in the second quarter, the Commerce Department said on Friday.

Why it matters: It's a significant slowdown from the first quarter's 3.1% growth rate, but still better than the 1.9% economists had expected. Once again, strong consumer spending offset the sharp decline in business investment and trade's drag on growth. ... Read more

More negative interest rates won't save Europe
Axios | Dion Rabouin | 07/26/19

The hope for interest rate cuts and more quantitative easing in September was not enough to placate the market on Thursday as stocks fell in the U.S. and Europe after an announcement from ECB President Mario Draghi that gave the distinct impression the central bank would ease monetary policy at its next meeting.

The state of play: Most analysts said the reaction from the market was due to Draghi sounding more hawkish than expected, but investors may simply be waking up to the idea that central bank easing isn't what it once was, and the ECB's policy tool kit looks exhausted. ... Read more

Friday News Roundup -- Domestic | 1a.org | 07/26/19 | 1hr
  1. This week, Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló resigned after nearly two weeks of protests calling for his ouster. His resignation comes amid several scandals involving leaked offensive text messages, corruption investigations and arrests of federal officials.
  2. We also bring you analysis on former special counsel Robert Mueller's testimony before Congress about his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. What, if anything, did we learn about the report?
  3. We're also following the latest on the Trump administration's immigration policy. On Thursday, a federal judge blocked the president from implementing a new asylum policy, which would prevent people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border from seeking asylum in the U.S. if they had traveled through another country first. In retaliation, President Trump has threatened a travel ban on Guatemalans.
  4. Plus, we cover Congress' bipartisan budget deal, the move to reinstate capital punishment and the latest on federal oversight of big tech.
Friday News Roundup -- International | 1a.org | 07/26/19 | 1hr
  1. A United Nations report says we have 18 months to deal with rising levels of greenhouse gases inside the Earth's atmosphere. "But today, observers recognise that the decisive, political steps to enable the cuts in carbon to take place will have to happen before the end of next year," the BBC reported.
  2. One of the understated headlines in last year's IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report was that global emissions of carbon dioxide must peak by 2020 to keep the planet below 1.5C.

Current plans are nowhere near strong enough to keep temperatures below the so-called safe limit. Right now, we are heading towards 3C of heating by 2100 not 1.5.

As countries usually scope out their plans over five and 10 year timeframes, if the 45% carbon cut target by 2030 is to be met then the plans really need to be on the table by the end of 2020.
  3. Trump also suggested that the United States could "wipe Afghanistan off the face of the earth". "If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week. I just don't want to kill 10 million people,"
  4. United Kingdom has a new leader. We know his name, but who is Boris Johnson?
  5. Further, this week Israel tore down a group of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said the quiet part aloud on why he’s still so close to former President Donald Trump: because we can use him for our goals. "President Trump has gotten people who wouldn't give me or Romney or anybody else the time of day. They believe he is on their side," the senator told the America First Agenda Summit crowd on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

AI - Artificial Intelligence

AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.

The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics | AI - Artificial Intelligence
Quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.  It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

China Valley of Tunnels

A report written by a Georgetown University team led by Phillip Karber conducted a three-year study to map out China’s complex tunnel system, which stretches 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The report determined that the stated Chinese nuclear arsenal is understated and as many as 3,000 nuclear warheads may be stored in the underground tunnel network.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
