Earth Overshoot Day Shows We're Tearing Through Resources Faster Than Ever July 29 marks the point at which we start to consume more than the Earth can replenish. And this date is getting earlier each year. On July 29, we cross an alarming threshold. This date marks Earth Overshoot Day, the point each year at which humanity starts to consume the world's natural resources faster than they can be replenished. It's taken us only 209 days to burn through a year's worth of resources -- everything from food and timber to land and carbon. We are using up nature 1.75 times faster than it can be replenished. To do this sustainably, we would need the resources of 1.75 Earths. These latest figures come from Global Footprint Network, an international nonprofit that calculates our annual ecological budget and the date at which we exceed it. Boris Johnson officially became prime minister after meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace last Wednesday. The bombastic Tory politician was widely expected to win the vote of the Conservative Party members a day earlier, but what happens next is less clear.
After serving two terms as London's mayor from 2008 to 2016, Johnson tacked hard to the Right as a leader of the "Leave" campaign ahead of the Brexit vote. Although the authenticity of his commitment to that position has been questioned, frustrated Brexiteers propelled his political ascent as former Prime Minister Theresa May failed to negotiate a divorce deal both Parliament and the EU could get behind. After a privileged upbringing that included studying at the elite Eton College and at Oxford, Johnson came to prominence as an EU-bashing journalist, writing columns that helped shape anti-Brussels sentiment in the U.K. Despite a posh accent giving away his background, he has cultivated an image of a bumbling everyman. In his first day as prime minister, Johnson sacked more than half the cabinet and installed pro-Brexit loyalists. He has promised to see the U.K. out of the European Union by the Oct. 31 deadline, whether or not a deal is reached. A no-deal Brexit could mean delays at ports, shortages of medicine and other supplies and serious economic harm to the country. There's also fear it could reignite conflict over the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, since the Republic will remain an EU member country.

The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.
