DOJ Takes First Steps Toward Indefinite Detention Of Families
HP | Elise Foley | 06/21/18

... The Department of Justice filed an emergency motion in federal court on Thursday to modify a 1997 settlement that prevents the government from detaining migrant children longer than 20 days. Ending the limitations on the length of time kids can be detained, the administration argues, is the only tenable alternative to splitting up families that are apprehended crossing the border illegally.

Although the Trump administration argues the changes it outlined on Thursday are the only way to end family separations, the filing suggests parents and kids could be split up again down the road. If a judge or Congress doesn't grant the government the authority to detain kids for more than 20 days, the government would be faced with either releasing whole families ? a practice Trump has derided as "catch and release" ? or keeping adults locked up without their children. ... The chip industry's fight to protect its IP from China
Axios | Erica Pandey | 06/22/18

Chinese raids of U.S. intellectual property have helped China build a solid high-tech economy. But the U.S. semiconductor industry is still far ahead -- and China is desperate to catch up.

The bottom line: Semiconductor manufacturers are fighting to protect IP from the Chinese, fearing that, without coherent action from the Trump administration, Beijing could bulldoze their industries. ... Read more

Why Central Americans flee to the U.S. despite "zero tolerance"
Axios | Stef W. Kight, Dave Lawler | 06/22/18

Behind the global furor over America's "zero tolerance" immigration policy are tens of thousands of adults and children -- most of them from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras -- who have risked extortion and sexual violence along the journey, and now separation from their families upon arrival. So why take those risks to reach the U.S.?

The big picture: This is not just a U.S. immigration crisis-- it's a Central American refugee crisis which started around 2013 and has continued to this day. In these countries, fear is often the primary motivator, rather than economic incentives. ... Read more

New Pruitt question: Where are his emails?
Politico | Emily Holden | 06/22/18

The EPA administrator wrote only one email in 10 months to anyone outside the agency, if the official paper trail is to be believed. Watchdog groups don't believe it.

An examination of Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt's government email accounts has uncovered only one message he wrote to anyone outside EPA during his first 10 months in office -- a number that has watchdogs questioning whether he is communicating in private.

EPA says Pruitt mainly holds discussions in person or over the phone, which would explain the meager electronic trail for his external communications. But Pruitt's critics remain suspicious -- especially in light of all the steps the agency has taken to conceal his activities, from refusing to release his meeting calendars to installing a $43,000 soundproof booth in his office. ... Friday News Roundup -- Domestic | 1a.org | 06/22/18 | 1hr
President Donald Trump signed an executive order to reverse his administration's highly-criticized practice of separating immigrant families at the border, though the "zero tolerance" policy is still in place and could result in families being detained together.

  1. And The Washington Post reports that the the Border Patrol will no longer refer parents with children who arrive at the border illegally for prosecution.
On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump visited the border in McAllen, Texas.

    CNN reports:
She was greeted by Upbring CEO Dr. Kirk Senske, who outlined Upbring's five markers of success: safety, life skills, health, education and vocation. The facility here opened in 2014 and there are currently 58 children aged 12-17.
"We're honored to show you our shelter," Senske told Trump. "We treat them like our own children."
During the roundtable, Trump asked several questions including how many times the children speak with their families. She was told twice a week, but the official noted that there is a process to verify that the persons they are communicating with are their families.
She also asked what kind of physical and mental health the children come to the facility in.
The children are "usually distraught" when they arrive, Trump was told, but "when they see the environment they start relaxing."

What happens next for these kids and their families? And how might Congress vote next week on two bills to overhaul our immigration policy?
  2. We'll also pick up on the Justice Department Inspector General's report on the FBI's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

    Vox explains:
Overall, Horowitz finds little affirmative evidence that political bias affected the FBI's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation -- but he criticizes political bias from certain employees, particularly counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok. And he criticizes Comey for deviating from established procedure.
  3. And EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt isn't the only Cabinet Secretary under fire. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was the subject of Steve Hilton's Swamp Watch, on Fox News.

    Forbes reports:
Ross shorted stock in Putin-tied shipping company named Navigator Holdings, after learning that reporters were preparing a story about Ross' interests in the company. The short sale, also first revealed in the Forbes report, meant that if shares of Navigator plummeted on the news, Ross could presumably make money on his investment.
Friday News Roundup -- International | 1a.org | 06/22/18 | 1hr
  1. Amid the controversy about American border policy, the United States left the United Nations Council on Human Rights. Nikki Haley, ambassador to the United Nations, said the move was made because the organization was biased against Israel, and failed to hold abusers of human rights accountable.
  2. In Afghanistan this week, the Taliban and Afghan security forces held a three-day ceasefire to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. The Taliban resumed fighting on June 18, although Afghan President Ashrif Ghani had asked to extend the ceasefire.
  3. American Lieutenant General Scott Miller is also expected to be confirmed by the Senate to take over as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. This comes after the Senate boosted military spending by $82 billion dollars for next year, according to Rolling Stone. We talked about Afghanistan earlier this week. Here's that show.
  4. Recreational marijuana is now legal in Canada. Matteo Rossant, 21, a business graduate at Concordia University in Montreal, told The New York Times he sees it as a business opportunity.

Lindsey Graham Mashups
Lindsey Graham

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said the quiet part aloud on why he’s still so close to former President Donald Trump: because we can use him for our goals. "President Trump has gotten people who wouldn't give me or Romney or anybody else the time of day. They believe he is on their side," the senator told the America First Agenda Summit crowd on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

AI - Artificial Intelligence

AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.

The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics | AI - Artificial Intelligence
Quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles.  It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

Wall Street and Banksters

Wall Street is an eight-block-long street running roughly northwest to southeast from Broadway to South Street, at the East River, in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Over time, the term has become a metonym for the financial markets of the United States as a whole, the American financial services industry (even if financial firms are not physically located there), or New York-based financial interests.

Nuclear weapons have come a long way and come in all types of different sizes. Some are relatively small while others are enormous, so big they boggle the mind at what they can be capable of, i.e. the Soviet 'Tsar Bomba' is/was 3,000 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
