Jan. 6 hearings deliver new template for digital-era dramatics The House Jan. 6 hearings have over-delivered on revelations and drama - unspooling as a disciplined, captivating summer series that is a new template for effective congressional hearings in the modern era. Why it matters: The committee ditched the flabby traditional format and has methodically built a taut, colorful narrative with a prosecutor's precision and a cinematographer's flair. Here's how the committee did it:
Trump's UNHINGED Plan To Escalate Violence During January 6th Capitol Riots | TYT | 06/29/22 | 10:13 Supreme court expected to rule on climate change and immigration cases - live Summary | Hello and welcome to the Guardian's live coverage of the day's political news. Here's what we're monitoring today: The Supreme Court is expected to give decisions today which could have lasting effects on how the US handles the climate crisis. The court has been weighing how much power the Environmental Protection Agency should have to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. Remain in Mexico, the controversial Trump-era policy which sends asylum seekers to Mexico while they wait for their immigration cases to be heard, is also on the table. The Supreme Court is due to decide whether Joe Biden can end the program, which has kept thousands of would-be immigrants in sometimes dangerous conditions across the US border. ... Read more |

Key Trump White House aide to testify before Jan. 6 committee Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, is expected to testify in person at the Jan. 6 committee's surprise hearing, according to a source with direct knowledge of the plans. Driving the news: Hutchinson, who was Meadows' most trusted aide, has been a crucial witness for the committee, offering an inside account of the West Wing in the days leading up to, on and in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Given her proximity to the chief of staff and her access to the inner workings of the White House, she had an extraordinary view into the events on Jan. 6, possibly including closed-door conversations and paper trails most staff were unaware of. ... NATO to dramatically increase size of high-readiness forces NATO will dramatically increase the size of its high-readiness forces to "well over 300,000," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced at a press briefing Monday ahead of this week's NATO summit in Madrid. Why it matters: The move, one of a number of steps NATO is taking to adapt to a "new security reality," helps constitute "the biggest overhaul of collective defense and deterrence since the Cold War," Stoltenberg said. The big picture: The NATO Response Force, which is designated for quick reactions to urgent situations, currently numbers roughly 40,000, Reuters reported. ... Why it matters: This is the foreseeable outcome of sanctions imposed due to the invasion of Ukraine, even though Russia had successfully pushed off the inevitable for months. For now, the default is mostly notable for its symbolism as Russia's first foreign debt default since 1918, reflecting the country's international pariah status and crumbling economy. The era of real-time climate change attribution is here Climate scientists are now able to tell whether climate change fuels temperature extremes in real-time, and even ahead of time, using forecast models, historical data and peer-reviewed scientific research. Why it matters: Presented in a compelling visual format accessible to the lay public and TV meteorologists alike, a new product known as the "Climate Shift Index," or CSI, was unveiled this week by Climate Central, a nonprofit research and journalism organization. The product signals a shift in thinking about the ties between daily weather and long-term climate change. Driving the news: Climate scientists have made great strides during the past decade in teasing out the role human-caused global warming plays in worsening or setting off extreme weather events, such as heat waves and extreme rainfall. ... What Gen Z really wants They crave work-life balance and mental health support. They dread getting stuck in a dull job. And they fault today's decision-makers for downplaying the issues that move them, like school shootings and racism. Meet Gen Z, as depicted by a new report. Why it matters: Gen Zers - those born between 1997 and 2012 - will soon be the biggest U.S. voting cohort, and they vote in record numbers. Plus, they'll make up 27% of the workforce in three years, per the World Economic Forum. Driving the news: The report, from the Walton Family Foundation and Murmuration (an educational inequality nonprofit founded by Emma Bloomberg), paints a picture of a generation that prizes family and well-being over money-making, isn't afraid to job-hop, and sees civic participation as vital to advancing their values. ... Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America by Maggie Haberman
Few journalists working today have covered Donald Trump more extensively than Maggie Haberman. And few understand him and his motivations better. Now, demonstrating her majestic command of this story, Haberman reveals in full the depth of her understanding of the 45th president himself, and of what the Trump phenomenon means. Interviews with hundreds of sources and numerous interviews over the years with Trump himself portray a complicated and often contradictory historical figure. Capable of kindness but relying on casual cruelty as it suits his purposes. Pugnacious. Insecure. Lonely. Vindictive. Menacing. Smarter than his critics contend and colder and more calculating than his allies believe. A man who embedded himself in popular culture, galvanizing support for a run for high office that he began preliminary spadework for 30 years ago, to ultimately become a president who pushed American democracy to the brink. The through-line of Trump's life and his presidency is the enduring question of what is in it for him or what he needs to say to survive short increments of time in the pursuit of his own interests. Confidence Man is also, inevitably, about the world thatproduced such a singular character, giving rise to his career and becoming his first stage. It is also about a series of relentlessly transactional relationships. The ones that shaped him most were with girlfriends and wives, with Roy Cohn, with George Steinbrenner, with Mike Tyson and Don King and Roger Stone, with city and state politicians like Robert Morgenthau and Rudy Giuliani, with business partners, with prosecutors, with the media, and with the employees who toiled inside what they commonly called amongst themselves the "Trump Disorganization." That world informed the one that Trump tried to recreate while in the White House. All of Trump's behavior as President had echoes in what came before. In this revelatory and newsmaking book, Haberman brings together the events of his life into a single mesmerizing work. It is the definitive account of one of the most norms-shattering and consequential eras in American political history. |

Consumers worldwide feel gloomy about the economy Americans aren't the only ones unhappy with how things are going. Consumer sentiment around the globe hasn't been this bad since 2009, when the world was mired in a historic recession. Why it matters: Rising prices are pressuring household budgets and pushing down consumer confidence in a slew of nations, a sign that households may tighten their belts and spending will dry up. "The slump in sentiment [is] being driven by rising inflation; an associated lift in interest rates; and a loss of confidence around the economic outlook, both here and abroad," Bill Evans, an economist at Westpac, an Australian bank that conducts a consumer sentiment survey in the country, said this week. How it works: For an indication of how the globe's consumers are feeling, look at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's consumer confidence index, which is comprised of household surveys conducted around the world about expected financial situations, ability to save, the general economy, and the labor market. ... How Americans will feel the squeeze from higher interest rates Mortgages, car loans and credit card debt are all about to get more expensive. The big picture: The era of dirt-cheap borrowing is over: The Federal Reserve is trying to slam the brakes on the economy, and the cost to borrow is going up as it rushes to contain inflation. Higher borrowing costs may push consumers and businesses to hold back on certain purchases. That will cool off demand, and perhaps put a lid on prices that are rising at the fastest rate in over 40 years. Catch up quick: The Fed said yesterday it would raise interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point, the biggest hike since 1994. With that announcement, the Fed has hiked rates by 150 basis points since March to a range of 1.50 and 1.75%. New projections show interest rates may hit 3.4% by the end of this year. ... Gee, you think?? Trump endorsement tracker: Which candidates have won and lost Candidates backed by former President Trump mostly prevailed in primaries on Tuesday night in a fresh test of the former president's influence over the GOP. Why it matters: A string of losses among candidates endorsed by Trump in May has punctured perceptions of his dominance over the GOP for the first time in years, raising questions about the competition he could face in a 2024 Republican presidential primary. The latest: Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt won the state's Republican Senate primary on Tuesday against former Army veteran Sam Brown, who mounted a late-stage comeback. What the stock market is saying about the economy Companies whose financial fortunes mirror the ups and downs of the actual economy led the market plunge into bear market territory Monday. Inflation rises 8.6%, the fastest pace in over 40 years A key gauge of inflation accelerated by 8.6% from a year earlier in May, the government said on Friday, a big leap from the previous month as costs for food and gasoline continued to surge. Why it matters: Hot inflation remains a huge challenge for the Biden administration and the Federal Reserve as they deal with price shocks not seen since the 1980s that are squeezing consumers and souring their view of the economy. Details: The Consumer Price Index rose 1% last month. Prices rose 0.3% in April, or 8.3% from a year earlier. ... Read more

Yellen says U.S. faces "unacceptable levels" of inflation The U.S. is currently facing "unacceptable levels of inflation," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told a hearing of the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday. Why it matters: Yellen made waves last week by admitting that she had been "wrong about the path inflation would take" when she predicted last year that inflation posed a short-term problem to the U.S. economy. What she's saying: At the hearing, Yellen praised the state of the economic recovery, which she said was marked by strong economic growth and "historically low" unemployment, but acknowledged that difficulties remain. "We currently face macroeconomic challenges, including unacceptable levels of inflation, as well as the headwinds associated with the disruptions caused by the pandemic's effect on supply chains, and the effects of supply side disturbances to oil and food markets resulting from Russia’s war in Ukraine," she said. ... Read more Making sense of Yellen's rescue plan kerfuffle In a strange series of events over the last few days, Bloomberg reported that a forthcoming book claims that during the early days of the Biden administration, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen pushed for a smaller pandemic rescue package, based on inflation fears — but Yellen denied it. Why it matters: To understand this seemingly obscure dispute is to understand a central fault line between the Biden administration and economists outside the administration who are sympathetic to its goals. ... "Red flag" laws test evidence that mass shootings are preventable The argument for "red flag" laws is built on researchers and government agencies' finding that most mass shootings are preventable if citizens, health professionals and courts can act on signs of troubling behavior in time. Why it matters: Although mass shootings only account for a fraction of firearm deaths in the U.S., advocates are pushing for a preventative approach to keeping guns out of the hands of people believed at greatest risk of committing violence. Red flag laws may also be a rare point of bipartisan consensus as the nation grapples with a surge of mass shootings. State of play: Red flag laws are built around what's known as extreme risk protection orders that allow certain citizens or law enforcement to petition a court to remove gun access from a person believed capable of committing homicide or suicide. The laws currently exist in 19 states and the District of Columbia. Bipartisan gun reform talks in the Senate include a measure that would incentivize more states to enact such laws, and President Biden called for a national red flag law in a speech last week. ... 100 days that rocked the globe 100 days, thousands dead, millions displaced, billions in destruction, countless lives touched: Russia's war in Ukraine looks less likely to end today than it did when it began on Feb. 24. The big picture: With the prospect for meaningful peace talks virtually non-existent, the war appears set to continue for weeks or months longer. 100 days on, Russia has largely shifted its focus to the eastern Donbas region after failing to capture the capital Kyiv. Moscow is progressing there, albeit slowly, as the West pumps more weapons into Ukraine. ... Why it matters: CEOs, boards, SPAC sponsors and private market investors all made a fundamental miscalculation in the benefits of going public via SPAC. For years, we heard that SPACs could be preferable to IPOs because they were faster and had more price certainty. The reality, though, is that SPAC mergers usually are more reliant on the investors who bought into the SPAC than they are on those that come in via the PIPE. Particularly given the SPAC's stock plus warrant structure. And those earlier buyers are often transient hedge funds that are prone to redeem when markets move south (as they have this year). ... Police say Tulsa shooting suspect targeted doctor he blamed for back pain A gunman opened fire inside a Tulsa, Oklahoma, medical building with a handgun and a rifle, killing at least four people, including a doctor who had recently performed his back surgery, before apparently taking his own life on Wednesday, law enforcement officials said. The latest: Authorities said during a press conference Thursday that the suspect specifically targeted Dr. Preston Phillip and noted he had repeatedly called the hospital complaining of pain. "We also have a letter on the suspect, which made it clear that he came in with the intent to kill Dr. Phillips and anyone who got in his way," said Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin, per the Associated Press. "He blamed Dr. Phillips for the ongoing pain following the surgery." Details: Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg told reporters Wednesday evening that as many as 10 people had been wounded in the shooting at St. Francis Hospital's Natalie Medical Building that happened just before 5 p.m., but none had life-threatening injuries. ... Elizabeth Warren tries to smack SPACs Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Tuesday said she'll soon introduce a bill to regulate SPACs, and also released a 26-page presentation on how SPACs "tilt the playing field and enrich Wall Street insiders." Why it matters: Warren's bill, the text of which hasn't yet been released, would codify the SEC's recently proposed rules and then go several steps further. For example, it would require additional disclosures, extend the SPAC sponsor's lockup period and increase liabilities for both sponsors and underwriters. Warren's much-hyped Stop Wall Street Looting Act, which sought to crack down on private equity, went nowhere. Same goes for her sweeping antitrust proposals, whereas a tech-specific antitrust effort led by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) might actually reach the floor this summer. ... Read more
A special purpose acquisition company (SPAC; /spæk/), also known as a "blank check company", is a shell corporation listed on a stock exchange with the purpose of acquiring a private company, thus making it public without going through the traditional initial public offering process. According to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), SPACs are created specifically to pool funds to finance a merger or acquisition opportunity within a set timeframe. The opportunities usually have yet to be identified.
In the United States, SPACs are registered with the SEC and considered publicly-traded companies. The general public can buy their shares before any merger or acquisition takes place. For this reason they have at times been referred to as the "poor man's private equity funds". The majority of companies pursuing SPACs do so on the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange, although alternative exchanges, such as the Euronext Amsterdam, Singapore Exchange, and Hong Kong Stock Exchange, have also overseen a small volume of SPAC deals. Despite the growth in the number of SPACs, academic analysis shows the investor returns on SPACs post-merger are almost uniformly negative, although sponsors at the flotation of the SPAC could earn excess returns, and their proliferation usually accelerates around periods of economic bubbles, such as the "everything bubble" between 2020 and 2021. ... The NRA: The Unauthorized History by Frank Smyth
For the first time, the definitive account of America's most powerful, most secretive, and most controversial nonprofit, and how far it has strayed from its origins. The National Rifle Association is unique in American life. Few other civic organizations are as old or as large. None is as controversial. It is largely due to the NRA that the US gun policy differs so extremely - some would say so tragically - from that of every other developed nation. But, as Frank Smyth shows, the NRA has evolved from an organization concerned above all with marksmanship - and which supported most government efforts around gun control for a hundred years - to one that resists all attempts to restrict guns in any way. At the same time, the organization has also buried its own remarkable history. Here is that story, from the NRA's surprising roots in post-Civil War New York City to the defining event that changed its culture forever - the so called "Cincinnati Revolt" of 1977 - to the present day, where President Donald Trump is the most ardent champion in the White House the NRA has ever had. For anyone who has looked at access to guns in our society and asked "Why?", this is an unmatched account of how we got here, and who got us here. |

AI - Artificial Intelligence
AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.
The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics
Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

911
On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
