UAW nabs its biggest win in decades The UAW's historic labor agreements with the Big Three automakers mark a reversal of more than 40 years of waning power for auto unions in the U.S. The big picture: Coming on the heels of similarly hard-fought agreements for UPS workers and Hollywood writers, the UAW agreements will likely inspire further organizing efforts and fuel the labor resurgence already underway. "This is a shot in the arm," said Kate Bronfenbrenner, a professor at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Experts at the start of the strike said there was no way they could win - but they did, she said. House GOP announces standalone $14.3 billion Israel aid package, setting up Senate clash The bill would be paid for by cutting money from the IRS and is scheduled to get a vote later this week. Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday unveiled the House GOP's $14.3 billion aid package for Israel's military drive against Hamas, which he has vowed to pass on the floor this week. Unlike other recent supplemental assistance packages, the House GOP plans to offset the cost of the Israel funding - largely by cutting funds to the Internal Revenue Service, likely in an attempt to win over conservative hardliners. Despite that leadership effort, the legislation already faces significant scrutiny from conservatives, who want to make sure the spending is fully offset. ... Over 24 hours after deadliest U.S. mass shooting of 2023, Maine suspect at large Communities in Maine remained on lockdown overnight, as hundreds of police officers searched for the man suspected of killing 18 people and injuring 13 others at a bar and a bowling alley in Lewiston. The big picture: Law enforcement officials searching for the suspect, identified as Robert Card, a 40-year-old U.S. Army reservist whom police say is considered armed and dangerous, surrounded a home in the nearby town of Bowdoin Thursday evening - one day after the deadliest U.S. mass shooting of 2023 thus far. The victims: "Police have confirmed that there were seven people killed at Sparetime Recreation, and eight people killed at Schemengees Bar and Grille," per a Maine State Police statement Thursday. Three others died in Central Maine Medical Hospital in Lewiston after being transported for treatment, according to the statement. Johnson is the latest Republican to win the party's nomination for the role since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was removed earlier this month. Driving the news: Johnson defeated a field of four other Republicans vying for the nomination on Tuesday evening. Johnson won the final ballot with 128 votes compared to 29 for Rep. Hamas Contained: The Rise and Pacification of Palestinian Resistance by Tareq Baconi
Hamas rules Gaza and the lives of the two million Palestinians who live there. Demonized in media and policy debates, various accusations and critical assumptions have been used to justify extreme military action against Hamas. The reality of Hamas is, of course, far more complex. Neither a democratic political party nor a terrorist group, Hamas is a multifaceted liberation organization, one rooted in the nationalist claims of the Palestinian people. Hamas Contained offers the first history of the group on its own terms. Drawing on interviews with organization leaders, as well as publications from the group, Tareq Baconi maps Hamas's thirty-year transition from fringe military resistance towards governance. He breaks new ground in questioning the conventional understanding of Hamas and shows how the movement's ideology ultimately threatens the Palestinian struggle and, inadvertently, its own legitimacy. Canada's historic wildfire season abates after 45.7 million acres razed Canada's record wildfire season that's repeatedly triggered air quality alerts across the country and the U.S. has eased, some five months after it began. State of play: About 45.7 million acres of land has burned in Canada this year - 2.5 times more than the previous record of 17.5 million acres razed in 1995. Some fires continue to burn. The big picture: Thousands of people have been displaced and all 13 of Canada's provinces and territories have been impacted by the unprecedented wildfire season - with blazes reaching the boreal forests ringing the Arctic and in peatlands, which function as natural sinks for carbon dioxide (CO2). Canada's wildfires have not only threatened lives and properties, they've also caused greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions to surge to historic levels during a national disaster worsened by climate change. ... U.S. to send Israel artillery shells initially designated for Ukraine The Pentagon plans to send Israel tens of thousands of 155mm artillery shells that had been designated for Ukraine from U.S. emergency stocks several months ago, three Israeli officials with knowledge of the situation tell Axios. Why it matters: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israeli ministry of defense told their U.S. counterparts they urgently need artillery shells to prepare for a ground invasion in Gaza - and a potential escalation of the war by Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border, Israeli officials say. U.S. officials have suggested that diverting the shells from Ukraine to Israel would have no immediate impact on Ukraine's ability to fight against Russian troops. But it's unclear whether U.S. military supplies to Ukraine could be stretched if the Israel-Hamas war becomes a broader regional conflict. ... Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America by Heather Cox Richardson
In Democracy Awakening, Richardson crafts a compelling and original narrative, explaining how, over the decades, a small group of wealthy people have made war on American ideals. By weaponizing language and promoting false history they have led us into authoritarianism - creating a disaffected population and then promising to recreate an imagined past where those people could feel important again. She argues that taking our country back starts by remembering the elements of the nation's true history that marginalized Americans have always upheld. Their dedication to the principles on which this nation was founded has enabled us to renew and expand our commitment to democracy in the past. Richardson sees this history as a roadmap for the nation’s future. Richardson's talent is to wrangle our giant, meandering, and confusing news feed into a coherent story that singles out what we should pay attention to, what the precedents are, and what possible paths lie ahead. In her trademark calm prose, she is realistic and optimistic about the future of democracy. Her command of history allows her to pivot effortlessly from the Founders to the abolitionists to Reconstruction to Goldwater to Mitch McConnell, highlighting the political legacies of the New Deal, the lingering fears of socialism, the death of the liberal consensus and birth of "movement conservatism." |

Jordan’s speakership campaign on its last legs With the list of defectors growing, even after a significant delay between ballots, his chances at the gavel are looking grim. Opposition to Jim Jordan's speakership bid is increasing, as the Ohio Republican again failed to get the 217 votes he needs to win the gavel. After halting voting for nearly a day in hopes of securing more Republican votes, Jordan instead lost two more votes on the second ballot. The House then went into another recess, at Jordan's request, before a possible third vote. Inside the pressure campaign to get Jim Jordan the House speaker gavel GOP speaker nominee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is ramping up the pressure on his critics ahead of a House floor vote on Tuesday, but some Republicans are warning it could leave him exposed to backlash. Why it matters: Jordan got significantly close to 217 votes on Monday, but there are too many public holdouts to coast to a victory on a first ballot. Two GOP lawmakers said they are less likely to back Jordan on a second ballot, which could further hinder his odds of getting the gavel. Data: Global warming may be accelerating September's sizzling global average temperature ensures that 2023 will be the warmest year on record. Why it matters: Confirmed by data from NASA, NOAA and Copernicus Climate Change Service in the E.U., the annual record is a surprise, and has only become clear in the past few months. It may signal a continuation of a trend towards an acceleration of global warming in recent years, occurring about 40% faster during the past 15 years when compared to any other period since the 1970s. By the numbers: September, with a temperature anomaly of 1.44C (2.58F) above average, was the most unusually warm month ever recorded in NOAA's 174 years of instrument records. This beat the previous warmest September by a staggering margin of 0.46C (0.83F), and the prior largest temperature anomaly, which occurred in March 2016, by 0.09°C (0.16F), NOAA concluded. Scientists "uneasy" about Earth's sped-up warming The globe's pronounced and unexpected temperature spike during the past few months is provoking unease among some of the most level-headed climate scientists. The big picture: September was the most unusually warm month in recorded history. This followed record heat in June and July - which was also the planet's hottest month - as well as August. Climate scientists point to several factors propelling the climate into uncharted territory. These include a strengthening El Niño in the tropical Pacific Ocean to an undersea volcanic eruption last year, which injected water vapor into the upper atmosphere. Other developments, such as changes in fuel mixtures for large marine vessels and weather patterns in the North Atlantic, are coming under scrutiny too. ... Death toll rises in Israel and Gaza as fighting rages: What to know Hamas stunned the world when it launched a surprise air, land and sea attack against cities across Israel in the most serious incursion against the country in decades. The Israeli military retaliated with heavy bombardment against the besieged Gaza Strip. The big picture: More than 1,200 Israelis and 1,055 Palestinians have been killed, thousands have been injured, and tens of thousands of others have been displaced in fighting that comes after a year of escalating violence in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. At least 14 Americans were killed in the Hamas attack, President Biden said on Tuesday. U.S. citizens are also among the hostages Hamas is holding in Gaza. At least 20 Americans were still missing, the White House said earlier Tuesday. ... Republican Candidates Waste No Time Pinning the Hamas Attack on Biden Hours after Palestinian militants launched a deadly multi-pronged assault on Israeli towns from the Gaza Strip yesterday, and Israel responded with a barrage of airstrikes, several Republican presidential candidates tried to lay blame for the escalation in the decades-long conflict at the feet of President Joe Biden. The Republican candidates claimed Saturday's attacks-which have led to a mounting death toll of more than 900-were linked to recent hostage negotiations with Iran, which has historically funded Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza. Last month, Iran allowed five imprisoned American citizens to return home in exchange for the United States unfreezing $6 billion in South Korean payments to Iran for oil. ... The technology also has long been faulted for failing to accurately identify Black people and others with dark skin tones. Russian strike kills 52 Ukrainians in one of war's deadliest attacks The death toll of a Russian strike on a cafe in Ukraine's Kharkiv region rose to 52 on Friday, Ukrainian officials confirmed. "Gonzo Governance: The Media Logic of Donald Trump by David L. Altheide
Drawing on social science and communications theory, Gonzo Governance offers a new interpretation of presidential power that shifts focus to the media dynamics that surrounded Donald Trump. The former president’s unhinged behavior and skilled media and digital manipulations changed the nature and process of significant governance at the federal and state levels, including denying election results and restricting voting opportunities. He went "Gonzo" - promoting himself without regard for conventional norms and practices - and blasted ideological fault lines into explosive political fragments, resulting in so much dissensus that numerous legislators would not recognize the newly elected President Biden, nor would they agree to take a potential life-saving vaccine because it had been associated with a politicized virus, COVID-19. Nurtured by media logic and a communications ecology that has wedded people to digital technologies and formats that govern the structure, grammar, form, expectations, and meanings of messages that can entertain, enlighten, and disinform, this form of governance alters the fundamental way that information is communicated. David L. Altheide emphasizes how these changes informed Donald Trump’s electoral strategies as well as the insurrection attempt on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Many GOP anti-Trumpers are throwing in the towel A growing number of anti-Trump Republicans are giving up - and giving into the belief that nothing will stop him from winning the GOP's presidential nomination. Why it matters: Despite former President Trump's poor record in the last three elections, his increasingly violent rhetoric and four felony indictments, many anti-Trump Republicans quietly are stepping back from pushing for an alternative. They've concluded that the GOP's base can't quit Trump. State of play: Win It Back, a political action committee (PAC) affiliated with the conservative group Club for Growth, says it burned through $6 million creating 40 anti-Trump messages - none of them effective, the New York Times reported. Republican Accountability PAC - a group of former Trump voters dedicated to moving beyond the former president — is giving up on the primary after spending $1 million on ads in Iowa. "We have stopped spending money in the primary," the PAC's leader, Sarah Longwell, told Reuters. ... Read more |

A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy by Nathan Thrall
Five-year-old Milad Salama is excited for a school trip to a theme park on the outskirts of Jerusalem. On the way, his bus collides with a semitrailer. His father, Abed, gets word of the crash and rushes to the site. The scene is chaos—the children have been taken to different hospitals in Jerusalem and the West Bank; some are missing, others cannot be identified. Abed sets off on an odyssey to learn Milad's fate. It is every parent's worst nightmare, but for Abed it is compounded by the maze of physical, emotional, and bureaucratic obstacles he must navigate because he is Palestinian. He is on the wrong side of the separation wall, holds the wrong ID to pass the military checkpoints, and has the wrong papers to enter the city of Jerusalem. Abed's quest to find Milad is interwoven with the stories of a cast of Jewish and Palestinian characters whose lives and histories unexpectedly converge. In A Day in the Life of Abed Salama, Nathan Thrall-hailed for his "severe allergy to conventional wisdom" (Time)-offers an indelibly human portrait of the struggle over Israel/Palestine and a new understanding of the tragic history and reality of one of the most contested places on earth. By the numbers: The campaign said that it has more than $37.5 million cash on hand entering October, with $36 million designated for use in the primary. The big picture: Trump has aggressively fund-raised off his mounting legal troubles, bringing in millions alone after the release of his mug shot in Fulton County. It stresses that corruption could cause Western allies to abandon Ukraine's fight against Russia's invasion, and that Kyiv cannot put off the anti-graft effort. AI - Artificial Intelligence
AIArtificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. AI research has been defined as the field of study of intelligent agents, which refers to any system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of achieving its goals.
The term "artificial intelligence" had previously been used to describe machines that mimic and display "human" cognitive skills that are associated with the human mind, such as "learning" and "problem-solving". This definition has since been rejected by major AI researchers who now describe AI in terms of rationality and acting rationally, which does not limit how intelligence can be articulated.

Quantum mechanics
Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.
Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale, but is not sufficient for describing them at small (atomic and subatomic) scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists attacked the Unites States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The Vietnam War
Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides--Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen and digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations.
